Tjeccles Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 I know the CRL states that the soles are tan but I feel that's inaccurate. I attached some pictures of the boots with two from the CRL. I also included a picture of tan (top), wheat (middle), and bronze (bottom) from Google (if they posted on the right order). All the images of the screen used boots I've seen in various topics look like the sole is a semi-transparent bronze instead of tan. Does anyone have images of the screen used boots that appear to be tan?
Stroker Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 I can see where your coming from, but as you know the screen used boots are super rare these days. So in turn we ask for a pair of boots that are close in color to the screen boots. Its almost impossible to get a pair of boots with the same color sole as the original boots. So we have to settle for what we can get. 1

I saw only one image from the MoM that looked tan but it also looked like someone used a really bright flash when taking the picture.
CatfoodRob Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 The CRL is created to allow costumes to be as accurate as possible, but with limitations of what is available in the current day . Tan soled shoes for boot conversions are common and simple to purchase . Any other colour is simply impossible . so, do you want scout troopers to exist ? If you do , you can't insist on dead screen accuracy . After all, we should be insisting every scout uses siera sneakers as a base for their boots , but as they stopped making them over thirty years ago , it spointless. Plus, the last photo you posted wasn't the correct sole .

Plus, the last photo you posted wasn't the correct sole . There are relatively easy ways, namely painting, around not having a bronzeish sole, which there are some boots out there with that anyways. Yes it does add an additional step to be done but it is possible.I'm also not stating we need to insist on dead in screen accurate. There are plenty of costuming errors that made it on screen. The difference with what I'm suggesting is if every shot of the sole is more a bronze than a tan. If that's the case, it's not just a costuming error or mishap that made it past editing it's actually how the costume is.Which photo are you talking about? The bottom two pictures are from the CRL. One is the actual image for the boots and the other is in the gallery portion to help show the sole cut.

BikerScout007 Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 The word "tan" itself has been somewhat controversial. I think we all assume it means the standard colored sole you find on hiking boots. Which is probably closer to "wheat" than actual tan. But somehow "tan" became the color settled on. This terminology has been in the CRL for years before I was even a member of the Detachment and has kind of taken on a life of its own. The real issue I see with basic approvals aren't the color of the soles but the cases where the soles are two-toned. And those of course need to be painted, or just avoided. We are in the middle of a minor CRL update right now, so perhaps we can find a better term to describe the sole color. 3
