matthewjblack
i need a little advice on these helmet bolts. im a little confused about how the hinge on the faceplate should work. ideally when making a hinge, obviously the to bolts should be parallel, but that wont allow them to sit flush. if they are tilted to match the helmet surface, it wont open without stressing the face. how do i resolve this? seems like a no brainer, but i dont want to break it! https://imgur.com/mtTINpe https://imgur.com/sgDbd4C
762s
the bolts dont sit exactly flush on screen used helmets either .. the top has a slight gap due to the contour of the hlemet. with a couple other helmets i had there was always slight pressure on the visor when opening it and they never really opened up to far or even stayed opened by themselves. are these the bolts that came with your helmet? are these elevator bolts? whats the maker of the helmet? what does the bolt look like behind the head? if it an elevator bolt with square shaft have you widened the outside (visor) hole to accept the bolts square shaft behind the bolt head? I did cut a square hole in the visor. i have not tried to sink them in deeper, but they can go in a lot more. the helmet is from moncal. just a little gun shy about cracking my visor. I may end up turning some new disks in the end. just wanna make sure I'm not screwing up too bad.Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
762s
alright so, the square is cut on the visor recessed area ... thats good! what i would suggest is .. ~ making some washers with some scrap abs to pull the visor away from the helmet ... youll put the washer between the helmet and visor and hope you have enough thread to get the nut on to the bolt. if not then you may end up with needing top goto the local hardware store and pickup some new elevator bolts. ~ possibly try grinding the square part away a little bit so, that the bolt is able to sit deeper in the recessed area ~ not sure if you could put the bolt in a vise and hit it a hammer to bend it abit .. just enough to get it sit more even in the recessed area just remember you dont want to cut the square out on the helmet ... I'll try that. I'll probably chuck it up in the lathe first and try to add a slight dimple to the middle and round the edges a touch. I'll make some washers as well. thanks so much!!Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

greenyone
Looks like yours is an MC helmet? I just put one together and you're right. Nothing about costume helmets is strait/symmetrical/parallel. Unlike a big name sports or motorcycle helmet these are more of a 'close enough' approach. Which I'm sure is similar to the actual screen used helmets. So there will be some unavoidable stress on the visor when tilting it up. Personally I only plan on opening mine the minimum amount to get my head in there which hopefully will make it last a long time without stressing/cracking. I took a grinder to the square portion of my MC supplied elevator bolts and kept the visor holes round. They sit nice and flush without having to much around with making the holes square. And like 762s suggested, I put some spacers between the visor and bucket to space out the parts. I just used some hardware store bougth black nylon washers I had in a spares bin from another project. And I replaced the wing nuts with these knurled nuts that should be a bit less painful if they are to contact the side of your head.

I was a little surprised to see the wing nuts. it did not look like something I wanted next to my head.Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
