Fans required?

Recommended Posts

Hi Troops,

Wondering if anyone can give me some advise.

My first ever troop is coming up and I am just trying to make sure I have thought of everything I need.

Have you found you needed a fan in your helmet?? I'm now concerned with over heating as I've been to the venue before and it can get really hot!!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

i do see at some events where i stand in one spot to long the lens start to fog up but, it just takes a little movement to get the air circulating in the helmet and the fog is gone.
i have yet to become overheated ... yes, it does get hot but, i also work outside for a living so im used to the heat prolly more so than others.
also, ive never been in an event where i couldnt get outside or to a cooler room or simply to a place where i could lift my visor for a few moments without the public noticing.

i have thought about fans just for the times when i have to stand in one spot due to the overwhelming photo ops taking place ... but, still havent done it yet.

everyones comfort level is different so, id say troop a couple events and see how you feel and go from there.

Having the ear holes that we do and the slot between the visor and dome gives us a bit more ventilation than most buckets.

As mentioned above, give it a go without the fans and see how it is. If you really need some, there's space inside the scout bucket for at least 1 fan, a switch, and a battery pack. I have 1 squirrel fan pointing up on the inside of my visor to help with ventilation, but there's plenty of scouts who don't have any fans or have different configurations.

Have fun on your first troop!

I live in a pretty warm part of the world and I've never felt the need for fans.  Like Dart said, the earholes and the channel that connects them in the back of the helmet provides a lot of airflow.  They knew what they were doing when they designed this helmet!

Plus if you ever need a gasp of air, you can always lift up your faceplate :)

I'm going to buck the trend a bit

I find up to about 30c no fans needed

Above that, hell yeah

Over summer I trooper one 34 deg day and needed a break every hour
Even just to dry myself
I installed fans, next troop in around 36 deg, I lasted 4 hours, and only came in as I was thirsty

As the others have said, try without, but...

While fans are needed in some costumes (I need to install some in my Jawa somehow), the important thing to remember, especially on your first troop, is listen to your handlers and don't be afraid to say "I need a break".

You should be fine then. Humidity will probably be more an issue than heat
