Salty’s biker scout WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi all, so after months of life delays, etc. I’ve taken the next step in my biker scout build, and this will be my thread moving forward on it. I have my bucket done, an amazing Altmann work. I have the undersuit, gloves, and suede in hand. The SC armor, bund, boots, and vest are on order.

My flightsuit fits better than the first one that I had to send back (basically a tent on me). I know I still need to take in the arms and legs a little. My next step will be the riding patches. I’m going to use some extra cloth I have around to make up the templates and test pin them to the flightsuit.

Great idea using scrap for the test pattern. It took me a few cuts with some scrap material to get it down pat. And don’t forget to hold on to those in case you need to make a new suit.

Ok so I did a rough cut and fitting of a riding patch pattern. It was hard to get a, um, “crotch selfie” so it isn’t the best pic. It looks better when I’m standing straight.

So, I’ve seen some pics where the corners are more rounded and some that are more squared-off. I’m guessing it doesn’t really matter in that respect? BTW, I’m not planning on going to Lancer. I just want to be approved so I can get out there trooping in something other than my sandy lol.

Also test fit the gloves!

Looking good. Is one patch longer then the other or is that due to the angle of the pic?

It’s mostly the angle of the pic, but I think one side was slightly angled. But I was just slapping it on to see if I was in the ballpark of where I wanted to be.

I couldn’t get a pic of the backside, but the patching was coming through slightly. I’ve seen pics on here where it goes through a little further so I may need to modify the pattern some. I’m not sure how strict it needs to be down to the centimeter.

I’m no Lancer but it’s looking good. I just got my patches done and it was the last thing I did cause it’s so vague in my opinion. I pinned my patches on then emailed pics with the suit on to my GML to see what he thought about it. Obviously he has the final say on what gets approved so I’d recommend reaching out to yours as well. It helped calm some fears before I went and had it all sewn on.

Yeah I think I’ll do that too. I was wanting to get this done first since it is what I’m most nervous about. I built a sandtrooper so the armor parts of a TB don’t look terribly intimidating to me lol

Don’t forget the thigh elastic

Yeah. Does it have to go underneath the patch? I was going to sew it flush to it. That way it would be easier to adjust if need be.

Elastic under the patch is the way to go :)

If you haven't already sewn the elastic in, I'd suggest you make it the same length as the distance between the riding patch and then take in an inch. So, give yourself a half-inch to stitch under the riding patch. That way, when you wear the suit, the strap won't droop or hang. It should be snug but not super tight.

I did already sew the suede, but I suppose I can cut open the section to slide the elastic under. But I have the outer seams of the legs cut open and I need them taken in a little bit. So I feel like I need to do that before working on the elastic.

Also, how much of the suede needs to show in the back? It’s not as visible back there as in the front.

Man it’s like everything your thinking I went through a month ago. Those patches are so vague. The CRL states “Suede or faux suede thigh patches extend over the flight suit crotch and down the front finishing above the knee.” There is no set of measurements as to where they end, so personally I took it as whatever looks good compared to the CRL model. If you look at the front of the model it looks like they are slightly past middle leg and the back is slightly before middle leg. Basically I think if your wearing it and can see patches in the back however slight it is your good as long as it doesn’t go past the middle of the leg. Again I’m not Lancer and I’m waiting for basic approval but I know for a fact my GML has no issues with the patch placement.

That may sound super lengthy and confusing, welcome to my mind lol.

there really cant be measurements as everyones body is different .. your right in saying that it "looks good compared to crl model" (or screen used model)
alot of the scouts costume is about getting the right look on each person.

Cool, yeah that makes me feel better. I only care about basic approval lol

I went round and round trying to wrap my head around the patches only to come to the realization it’s just gotta look good

  • 1 year later...

Hey everyone! So it’s been about a year, but having a baby puts things on the back burner. I actually have my build pretty much complete. I have a few more little adjustments I want to play with and will be ready to submit!

I’ve done two low key non-LFL troops with my local squad as test runs. Nothing fell off and it’s fairly comfortable. Much more flexible than in my sandy!
