0XlX0 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Hey everyone, I received my Altmann's helmet from Spike last summer. Since then, I haven't done much with my helmet. Until recently, when I ordered Kevins accurate hardware set so I could get the correct bolts. Unfortunately the new bolts just aren't long enough to replace the original ones that came with the helmet. That's not a huge deal to me however because I was intending to replace them with elevator bolts after talking with Peter aka Retrofire who gave me a lot of helpful suggestions. I've been to multiple local hardware stores and have found bolts of all lengths and sizes, but it appears no one carries bolts that have a bolt head diameter of 22mm to match the originals. At this point, I was thinking I may as well just cut the heads off the bolts from Kevin and glue them to machine screws? That is unless anyone knows where I can purchase the accurate sized elevator bolts either online or locally? Appreciate any suggestions!
Chopper Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 I've seen a few different takes on this issue. One option is similar to what you suggested, which is to saw off the screw portion of the 3M bolt, but keep the square part. Then you can cut the head off of a longer bolt stem, drill a hole into the square portion (just don't drill through the face of the 3M bolt!), and glue the longer stem into the plastic. One issue is getting a good plastic/metal bond, which would be tricky, given the rotational forces, so if you can find a plastic bolt to use, instead of metal, that'd probably work better. Another method would be to trim off the plastic screw portion of the 3M bolt, and then secure the 3M bolt in the helmet with a shallow depth screw and a washer. Effectively, the 3M bolt ends up becoming the end nut and the screw is now on the inside of the helmet. Again, you'd have to be careful to not let the screw poke out of the face of the 3M bolt, but with some blue loctite it should hold the 3M it in securely. Anyhow, that's my 2 cents on attacking your issue. I'm sure the others will chime in with some other ideas, but let us know what you decide on.
762s Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 if you contact spike/altmann he will send the correct bolts if im not mistaken ... i believe he made a post around here that he had made molds of them edit.. in his thread on the last pages .... “spike 11 Oct 2017 I have now cast Lancer level buttons so will be fitting those now. If I can post a pic I will. local scout supplied the correct bottons for me to mold off. new chin cup also, revised shape after viewing some pics. cheers†2
BikerScout007 Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 As long as it looks correct from the outside, we don't concern ourselves with how it was done on the inside! On my first bucket, a KS, I took off their furniture pad bolts and just glued painted aluminum discs in their place!
spike Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 762 is right, I do my own bolts now with a thick/longer shank, I found the smaller shank isnt long enough.. message me for a set for the Alt you may have to cut/file a square on the face cover. early version were a round hole. my thread covers this cheers 1
