NCwerewolf Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Here's something I've been meaning to ask everyone since I first started this crazy adventure.... How is that weird little thing on our rear ends considered a thermal detonator when we all know *THIS* is a thermal detonator...? 2
Aliaz Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Different kinds of thermal detonators. Stormtroopers have one aswell that is similar but different to ours. Just like how grenades IRL can look different. 1
762s Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 maybe, they represent the small keg, like whats around the st. bernards neck and, they are actually filled with blue milk instead of whiskey/brandy and we are all sadly mistaken that they are thermal detonators? 3
NCwerewolf Posted February 11, 2018 Author Posted February 11, 2018 If I remember right from decades of useless knowledge (I think I've forgotton more about the SWU then most civilians know lmao), I think the TK version was supposed to originally mimic the Werhmacht gas mask can. Where and when did we get the impression it was a grenade? Lmao. I can see the TK version perhaps being a container to hold things (maybe even grenades), but the TB version?? That thing doesn't even *look* like any kind of greande, lmao. Even when you kick in your best imagination! Hahah! Why not some kinda sensor, or scout-specific optic, or candy bar holder or SOMETHING! Nope, we went with a curved accordion grenade. Lulz. All this to say, I don't care what it actually is. Just seems like of all the things it *could* be, a thermal detonator is one of the most extreme leaps to make. Lol Sent from my SM-T560NU using Tapatalk 1
Retrofire Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 I believe that these are more akin to a satchel charge than a grenade. Like the charges Solo planted in the Endor bunker. In the book “Choices of One†by Zahn the Stormtrooper LaRone uses his thermal det to breach a wall to help Govenor Ferrouz escape an attack. Grenades and detonators are great for getting the Rebels attention but if you really want to do some wholesale rearranging you pull out the TD. The Shores are pretty talented with grenades look what they did to that shuttle on Scarif. They probably didn’t use their TD since it would have smoked the whole landing facility. 4
NCwerewolf Posted February 11, 2018 Author Posted February 11, 2018 Retro...bro. You just singlehandedly convinced me to start calling it a satchel charge. I don't even care. In RotJ, Threepio says Boushh (Leia) is holding a thermal detonator. Between that scene, and all the frag-esque TDs I've thrown in the game Dark Forces (everyone born before 1990 knows wassup lol), a "thermal detonator" will always be a spherical grenade. A satchel charge, though??? Brilliant. Never thought about it that way. Retro, you win the forums today. Sent from my SM-T560NU using Tapatalk 2

And Dark Forces was awesome! 2
M.J Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 Its like bombs they come in different shapes and sizes Btw Boushhs thermal detonator kicks butt...it has pretty lights and flashes ! 2
Dragon_a Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 I think the TD on the stormtrooper goes back to an early draft when they were also going to be carrying lightsabers. That tube was where they stored them. The weapon changed but the design stuck.
Retrofire Posted February 15, 2018 Posted February 15, 2018 In the Star Wars Costumes book there’s a blurb about Nilo Rodis-Jamero and George talking about a test fitting of the full costume. They both said something is missing on the back and it’s believed that this where the scout TD came from. Nilo said “if it’s there you won’t notice it, but if it isn’t you’ll noticeâ€. I also noticed something interesting for you folks following Solo. If you look at the illustration by Nilo on the top right hand side on page 189 you’ll see a picture of what looks like a spot on match for the trooper riding the hover bike in the trailer. The main difference in the solo version is the lid but the rest looks darn close. Looks like LFL pawed through some of the earlier concepts to make this new one. I can’t recommend this book enough. It has been a fascinating read into how these amazing designers and costumers build the costumes we love so much. 2
