The resolution and exposure of the image reproduced in the book doesn't really show the pattern on the side of the sole too well. We've seen better photos in other places. The mention that no horizontal ridges are visible is probably just due to the fact that the leather cover looks to have sagged a bit in the rear here, covering over the pattern we see in other, better photos.
