Hello all, I am looking to join the ranks of the “tree dodgerâ€. I have secured the hard parts (armour) and am putting out feelers for the soft bits.

I have made an order through Dickies for one of their overalls, which will need to have some stitching and patches removed when it arrives and am also waiting on a message from a trader on the 501st Pathfinders site to purchase the boots, cummerbund and patches. I have already bought a pair of suitable gloves, though these also need a slight tweak to be accurate and am waiting on some materials to start actually building the armour parts. I bought the wrong fabric (white webbing) for the strapping so need to get some white cotton fabric, as CRL has changed.

No point putting up pictures at the moment as it is just a box of “stuff†but when I have something to show I shall update!

I have downloaded a PDF for making my own flak vest for this, out of a black t-shirt. I will be asking “my old dear†very nicely if she can help with the sewing of this. Found that on one of the discussions on this site and will be the first time in years I have attempted anything like that!

Updates to follow!! :D

ok overalls have turned up and have some pockets and tags that need to be removed, but more over I need to get some suede for the groin, any ideas where from? I ordered some that turned up but looks to me like faux material.

Also, spent 4 hours on friday of last week going all over the island trying to buy a rivet gun... no joy none of the shops had one instock, literally need to do 8 rivets!! (2x per knee pad(4 total), 2x for the tank, 2x for the helmet) so that I can start building the helmet and also get the chest armour done. Will update when i find one, or buy online.

According to the Lancer CRL from 501st the tank on the back is riveted to an elastic strip that goes over the back armour in a loop and holds it on. I will do this but am also going to glue the parts of the tank that make contact too - for strength. This will be the top of the tank and the upper sides, all of which make good purchase.

I am going to cheat with the cummerbund and boots and buy them from a Trader on the forum.

Hi ya Adam, I was going to suggest to take a look at the suede but you mentioned "Lancer" There is a Leather supplier here in Australia but it might be a tad fair in postage :(

No harm in Cheating. I'm also a seller thats cool.

there is a local leather smith near me, may pop in one day and ask him if he has any, think Aus might be a tad pricey on import!! thanks for the suggestion/ offer though. ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for lack of photos etc but this build is all or nothing when it comes to progress.

So far I am still sorting and buying the parts for the costume. I have a overall being tailored shortly, which will have the correct suede and elastics in the right places and will be ready after Christmas. I have a pair of boots and Cummerbund on order as well (though no ETA on that yet).

  • I have sourced a Hold Out Pistol and will be ordering that in January.
  • I need the correct bolts and a visor for the helmet and need to decide if I fit a chin strap or not (not sure if this is required or not for lancer).
  • I need to assemble the belt and thigh boxes - is there a specific material (and specific width ect) for the belt or can anything be used behind the plastic??
  • Once I have the boots I can start on the holster.
  • Gloves have been sourced and I am adjusting them to better replicate those worn on screen - which requires the removal of some strapping, covering of a strip of leather and adding some suede to the fingers and thumbs.

That's all for now, sadly. I will put up some images in January when I should have something to actually show.
