Tips for painting the white circle on the tank topper?

Recommended Posts

Lancer Specs say that the white circle and red stripe have to be painted. But painting a perfect circle is obviously a lesson in frustration.

Anyone have any tips on painting this thing? How did all you other Lancers do it?

The circle was etched into my greeblie, so I was just able to blob paint on that spot, trace the outline of the etching with my fingernail, and then scrape off the excess before it dried

Hah, no such luck for me. DVH's rubber tank toppers are great, but unfortunately don't have that marking.

This is the best I can do using a washer as a stencil. I'll be weathering the armor anyhow, so I dusted the edges a bit to throw off my ocd.

Also, does the red stripe go along the back edge (the edge at the bottom of the photo) as well as the top? I've seen some people paint it like that, but I can't find a decent reference photo for what is "correct".

Gino painted his red stripe all the way down the sides. Also his had a red bar across the top and not a white circle. He said that when he saw the Scout armors at the archives, each tank had a different design on it. It's possible the white circle is just one such design. But that's the one we are requiring for now

I had some left over sticker material and cut around a coin and used this as a template for painting, I used black first to fill gaps in case of any bleed through then went over with white paint

So there you have it.... the white circle was probably a decal too

Does that mean the Lancer standard will be amended/clarified?

Right now the white painted circle is a basic standard. Those take a lot of time to change because we have to go through the LMOs. Also, more research would have to be done. In the meantime, I think what you did looks very good. About the same as mine

Fair enough. Makes sense.

Thanks again, Mickey. Hopefully this project will be finished soon enough and I can officially submit my application.
