KO22 Posted May 31, 2017 Share Posted May 31, 2017 Hello I am just starting on my scout as I bought the armor and helmet from a fellow trooper. It is used but I think I can get it up to snuff but I have some questions about what to get for some of the other items. I want to get my soft items but I am not exactly sure which to get. Please note that I am also going to be building a set from WTF for my son so I any advice that would help with that would also be welcome. Flight Suit: I have seen different posts on where to get these but I honestly am looking for one that would take as few modifications as possible. I do have a seamstress that is willing to do the sewing but she has little idea about this outfit so simple is good but I know there will be modification needed. I have looked at both the redkap and mypilotstore.com suits. I was leaning towards the mypilot flight suit (the cheaper one) as I was told to get the kids one for my son and I thought it would be easier to get them from the same place, but I want to get what is best for the project. If needed I am not very big, 5'7 and 140 is all. Suede: I was at Joann fabric and they had different types. Is there is particular one that is needed? If so, which one? Cumberbund: Again what material is used? I haven't seen a thread that says definitively which fabric to use. Vest: I have seen two black T-shirts can be used to help with this. Anything else I should know? Pockets: Same question, which fabric should I use? Gloves: Where should I go for these? I have seen ebay (which scare me) and Wampa Wear. Any suggestions? Also for my son, who is nine and not very big. Keep in mind for him total accuracy is not required but the closer the better if anyone knows. As for the armor set up is there a certain thread that shows how to rig it up? I have talked to troopers about how they can get it on almost like putting on a shirt but I would love pictures to help me out. I made my Stunt TK but that has a ton of snaps and is not easily slipped on and off so I was hoping to make this one a little bit better to get on and off. I will tackle the belt and boots later. stasz Posted June 1, 2017 Share Posted June 1, 2017 Have a read through the soft armor forum for mucho discussion on materials for the bund, pouches, the tshirt-to-vest tutorial, etc. mypilotstore is just about the only place I've seen a kid's flight suit that looked more realistic than the "Top Gun" style pilot Halloween costumes. And the only place I've seen kid's doors in black. For your suit, if mypilotstore has something comparable price wise to the RedKap action back coverall go for it, but you can't beat those RedKaps for under $30 on Amazon. There are a few vendors here who make great suits ready to go with the mods. They're considerably more expensive, but ready to wear. The modifications themselves aren't super difficult and don't really require more than rudimentary sewing ability. There was a discussion somewhere last year about what order people put their gear on, tricks, etc. Maybe in the General Discussion forum or the hard armor forum? I don't recall. But it's here somewhere! Strapping info, etc can be found in the hard armor forum. I assure you this costume is easier and faster to put on than a TK. Good luck with your project! Keep us posted. There are some decent wip videos there. Also make your own build thread to post pics of your progress and we will be happy to give pointers along the way. You may luck up and find a member in your garrison who commissions soft parts for costumes such as officer hats who maybe willing to tackle that and we have members here who also commission soft parts. However these ones here are the best of the best Ill try helping as much as i can: Suede: I used Black Suede i ordered from Amazon it worked just fine. Cumberbund/Pockets: Ill have to find you that information I believe i used StudioCreations though (they have an email to someone who does customs at a reasonable rate) Vest: Flak Vest I first used the Shirts approach from here it was awesome idea! It was comfy also. Then i went to a friend and they made me a heavy duty one.... but to get approved I did use the Shirts. Remember do the sew on velcro on the back. Gloves: I used Wampa Wear whenever they are in stock great item. I love the zipper to hide my Debit or Credit Card for when i was at Celebration.... it was a god send! Armor I used StudioCreations if anything view my Facebook i have a lot of photos of me building my Kit its a lot easier putting on that (minus the Diaper lol I need help with the Velcro there) The Belt if you used Studio Creations he sends the items to you all in one chunk he is awesome at that. For Boots I will check if I still have the material (will you be at the Central Garrison Banquet in August, if so remind me and I am sure i can bring the White Material for the boots to save you some costs ) Cheers Kelly! I am going to go with the redkap coveralls and order Wampawear gloves. I am still wondering about what type of suede to get for the suit. I have a ton of photos but I was wondering if there are specific How Tos that are good for the Cumberbund and undersuit (specifcally the crotch and neck). I have good ones for the pockets and flak vest. Also what type of batting do you use in the cumberbund and crotch areas. Which boots should I get? I will make the using the marine vinyl but I am not sure which ones will work. I am assuming I will need them so I was wondering where to get them. I will contact SC as I see they have replacement greeblies I just wanted to see if there was somewhere else to go. Retrofire Posted July 28, 2017 Share Posted July 28, 2017 Give these a shot 1.) I used Texas Steer boots from Kmart. They are easy to modify and the soles are the correct color as well as easy to cut. They are also comfortable to wear even on long troops. 2.) The best thing to do is get some painters tape and test fit your straps with your belt. Keep in mind that the boxes should be 1.5-2 inches from you belt line. Here's a picture of the back half of my belt. 3.) SC is always a good source you can shoot them an email. There is also Chef, WTF, and Spike that have greeblies as well. 4.) Strider has an excellent Lancer build thread over in the armory. I highly recommend that you give it a look through as he addresses the shoulder straps. Hope this helps! KO22 Posted August 9, 2017 Author Share Posted August 9, 2017 Ok, like I said I bought my kit used and I am in the home stretch, in fact all I really need to is finish the boots which is no problem and the thermal detonator. So I ordered my greeblies from SC and I just got them in the mail. My problem is that the greeblies do not fit in space as it is only about 1.5 cm (or 5/8 inches) wide. Bubonos Posted August 9, 2017 Share Posted August 9, 2017 If its sc it should fit. But it could be from a diffrent mold maybe. The boots are actually quite easy and fun to make. Get the marine vinyl from Johannes or another fabric store. A yard is more than enough. The template should be available here, it'll be in the boot section. You can even go with Wal-Mart hiking boots and cut the soles. I was lucky and the brama hiking boots at the time had soles that match basic approval and they were $25. I am wondering about the TD being an SC because there is no way the greeblies will fit. I just wanted to know if anyone had a suggestion other than ordering an entire TD. It just stinks as I was trying to finish for a troop that's next weekend and for such a small thing as compared to what I've already done.
