Is the whole snout painted black and then the greeblies are attached right on top?

Yes. That is what I did.

Yup that works. I suppose you could just paint the black parts that show but that seems like it would be more time consuming

From the production helmet and some screen grabs the snout looks to be painted a third of the way around the snout.
