2 quick questions for Belt and drop box straps.

Recommended Posts

Two quick questions. according to the 501st databank. It says to use textile material. Is it talking about using cotton webbing again?

and second how wide are the straps for the drop boxes and the part that connects the belt in the back?

The webbing can either be cotton or synthetic. If you are working toward Lancer you'll want the 1.5" cotton webbing for your drop boxes, bridge straps, and chest/back armor connections. For the belt that should be 2" and for that connection I used Nylon since it has some stress from bending and the TD weight. I didn't want it to sag.

Thanks so much for the response. That is exactly what I needed to know. Not going for lancer (at this time anyway) But any small mods I can do that can get me that much closer I will do. One more question for the underarm straps is there any clips underneath? Or do you simply role the end of the strap with a little bit of fabritac so it cant pull through the armor slit?

I just tab-velcroed them inside, i.e. they don't "double back".

If you are planning on going "Lancer" at some point, then I suggest you get this right from the get go.

It's actually more complicated to try and swap stuff out after the fact than it is to just put it in right first time, and it's not really any more expensive and it's no more work beyond a little time spent sourcing the correct stuff.

1.5" (40mm) cotton webbing for the drop straps.

2" (50mm) nylon webbing for the belt (I suggest get enough to go completely around you and use that as a belt, rather than using the plastic belt as a supporting medium... It takes the stress off the belt).

For the chest/back sides, use the same as the drop straps. I make one long length with a bit of elastic in the middle. It then joins on the chest plate with velcro, goes through the back plate and back to the chest but is essentially 'loose' across the back and the elastic allows it flex as you move and breathe.

Got it. The loose ends of the drop straps are riveted to the belt. Correct? Any particular color. Like I said before I got everything pretty much second hand, which was good enough back then. Now I am just trying to get it up to current standards. The TD is connected to the web part of the belt in the back with the two metal clips. I see the ones I want to order at theclip.com. I am just not sure how to connect them to my TD.

Again thank you for all of the help. I am hoping to have all of this done by SW weekends at Lego Land.

I used white for the belt and off white for the drop boxes. I'm still waiting for my TD, but I plan to do mine similar to how pandatrooper did his. If you haven't seen his build thread, you need to look it up.

I used snaps to connect the front and rear straps for the drop boxes. You can find them at Tandy or Amazon and they usually come with a setting tool. Another option could be to sew them to the belt or use Velcro. I don't think I would go with rivets as that puts a potentially sharp piece of metal at your back.

Regarding the TD clips the ROTJ TD uses rivets to connect those pieces. If you go that route remember to use a backing washer to keep it from pulling back through. Shaunpug (Shaun) has done some great research with the TD with pics. Here's the link: http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?showtopic=17040. Hope that helps and keep the great questions coming!
