So I was looking at the inside of my coat and the lining on the inside looked really similar to whatever was used for the cummerbunds in the movie. It's that swishy nylon type material. Anyone else ever thought this?

That's funny you bring that up. I was talking about this with I think Shaun and I came to the same thought in that it looked synthetic along the lines of ski jacket material. That's a great find. I'm starting a new bund for my Lancer submission and I was going to see if I could find this material and give it a try.

A lot of us have suspected it was something along those lines. But duck cloth still seems to be the favorite of most bund makers!

I'm pretty happy with my bund but after noticing that I'm like, "dammit I'm gonna have to make a new one" haha but let me know if you are able find the material anywhere. I'm gonna look at joanns at some point and see if I can find something similar.

I'm gonna look into making a new one in my spare time with something similar to my jacket liner. This costume is OCD central.

Yeah I blame guys like Mickey for that. I'm looking at my armor every time I troop. I'm a freak about checking it in a mirror before I step out to make sure everything is squared away and I have a garrison mate check me from the back to make sure it's square from there. I did a stupid move a few weeks back and I put my bund in with my flight suit and it ended up bleeding a little on my bund from the suede. What a doh! moment. So a new one is in the works. If I happen to come across that material I'll let you know. My mom does a ton of sewing and she has a couple of speciality stores that she goes to so if I can't find it locally I'll have her look. Either way I'll pass on the info.

I've made my last few cummerbunds from nylon based material. I believe Chef has started doing the same.

I think it does give a more accurate appearance than cotton. Has a different contrast to the canvas of the pouches and reflects light differently.

Yeah, I've been making them out of synthetic material for a long time now.

I believe that due to the difference in texture as Andy pointed out that this is what causes the differences in 'colour' between the bund an the pouches and they were both indeed 'white'. The natural fibre of the cotton for the pouches and webbing just takes dirt better and makes it look muddier faster.

Here's a couple of discussions we had on it back in 2012.

Welcome to the Pathfinders! It's a shared affliction and I think we all have it.

Well I had the day off so I figured, today's a good day to make a new cummerbund. I found a material at joanns that looked somewhat similar to the jacket lining. I also made the bund a lot shorter. It's now 9", my other one is 10.5". Can't decide which one I like better. Any input? Left is the new one.

I love that opening statement..."had a day off and what the heck I'll just make a new bund". Really nice start the one difference I see is that your older bund had a good amount of padding between the layers and the new one seems a little thin. Maybe it's the weathering that brings it out. Can I ask what material you found? It looks like a good match. Thanks for sharing this and keep up the great work!

Left one looks way better to me. Nice and short and stops right at the belt. Just like in the movie.

Good job!

What are days off for, if not scouting? Lol and yeah my other bund I used half inch foam for the ribbed section and it felt s bit too thick to me. It was also creating a pot belly look that I wasn't happy with. So I used quarter inch padding this time for the ribs. It looks a bit better in person as the photo I posted wasn't very good. So the material was a polyester and cotton blend. I stupidly didn't take a picture of what it was. Next time I'm at Joanns I'll snap a photo

Yeah I agree. The short one definitely has a more screen accurate look to it that I'm digging.

I'm also interested in what fabric you used!

I picked up the same stuff last weekend. Just a shiny polyester. I'm gonna see how it turns out.

From what we know, if the Star Wars Costumes books is accurate, is that the 'bund and the flak vest were made from the same polished cotton. We know all the materials for ROTJ were dyed too.

That said, finding polished cotton is near impossible for most people. I've got some left over from my late aunt but it's too thin to use for a 'bund.

What I've been using is actually a heavy dull satin. I use the inside of the material, not the shiny outside. Since it's cotton, it'll breathe and it has that sheen without being too shiny. It also wrinkles like the originals. I'll eventually make myself a more accurate 'bund, but I'll do it again with the satin.

Plus, I can wash it with no issue when it gets stank. :D
