Kaabous
I spent a lot of time looking through the forums here and various vendor/prop websites and I think I am ready to jump in with my first 501st build. I plan on doing the soft gear myself (except the gloves - Wampawear's look excellent), or at least trying it, as well as building my own blaster. For armor, I am pretty sure I'm going with SC. The armor seems to have a very good rep (even moreso now that the belt is one piece) and it sounds like the serviced is great. I had planned on getting the full kit w/ helmet there, but as I have been looking around the forums, it looks like the SC armor is popular, but the helmet is not. To my novice eye looking through the pre-approval and other build threads, it looks like there were looser tolerances, particularly in the visor/helmet fit, in some the SC helmets but others looked pretty indistinguishable from the higher end helmets to my novice eye. Since the helmet is the showpiece of the kit, I want to make sure I make the right decision. What is best helmet from a quality:price ratio? Is the SC helmet a good long-term buy? What if I eventually plan to push for lancer? Thanks!
Erik R
Another kit you might wanna look out for soon is WTF's Scout kit. Looks like it's gonna be crisper than SC.
0XlX0
SC Helmets from what I know are good quality, just run on the smaller size. I'm building my costume atm as well, and was planning on going with Kropserkel myself. I've since however decided to possibly go with an Altmann's instead. Most accurate IMO of the three mentioned, and comes ready to wear minus the liner.
Kaabous
Thanks for the replies. The Altmann helmet was a pretty limited run, right? How often do they come up for sale? Another thought occurred to me today. Are there many events that restricted by troop type? I guess I'm asking if going TB for my first build will limit my participation versus having a TK? I browsed through my area garrison and there didn't seem to be much in the way of restrictions, but I'd like to be sure particularly for larger 501st events. Dragon_a
If you're interested in an altman look in the trade forum. Spike (altman) has a thread there.

Regarding your participation it all depends on what your Garrison needs are for the specific troop. Here in the Dune Sea I've never been denied a troop because I was a scout. My CO encourages all the Garrison members to participate. I don't think being a TB will limit you in any way. If anything the TKs in my Garrison love to have the TBs as they kind of go hand in hand and we feel the same way about them. I love trooping with all sorts of different folks. It awesome to meet new folks in the Garrison who have put together amazing costumes. The last one I trooped with was a level 3 Fett and that rig was crazy cool. Took him like 30-40 minutes to suit there was so much to put on. We ended up just talking shop while he suited. Sorry I digress I'll bet that your Garrison CO Is going to be tickled to have another troop and I can't imagine any limitations there.
