Faceplate Flip-up

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I was looking at (drooling over) some of the construction tutorial pictures from the pghfett / skygunbro helmet and something occurred to me... The faceplate appears not to flip up. Since I don't own one and can't confirm this, can someone tell me if this is the case? It looks like it is one solid piece.

In this picture it looks like the helmet is one solid slip on piece.

Has any one come up with a way to make a flip-up mod for the pghfett / skygunbro BARC helmet?

Thanks,

DaVe

Mike who made that helmet and of which I can say proudly I own one. He did try to make it so it fliped up but he ran into problems with making it flip up. So he went a head and made it static with no flip up face plate. But as in Jedi and all the behind the sceens stuff we know the scouts fliped up, but the CGI clones we never seen that happen so we can go with the fact that other clones did not have flip up face plates. So we can only assume that maybe the BARC may have had full helmets like the rest of the clones did.

But to better answer your questions, no the face plate/visior does not flip up on the BARC helmet for now. And no one here has at least that I know of tried to do the mod work on it so it will flip up.

Guest skygunbro

I worked close with mike while he was sculpting this helmet and I told him not to bother trying to make it flip up...would have made for a nightmare.

I told him my biker scout helmet although it does flip up slides over my head without having to flip it up.My biker scout helmet is smaller than mikes BARC so we didnt see an issue with it not flipping up.

Flip up face is a cool feature. The problem with any helmet whether fanmade or production is it wont work for everyonesize wise.

I think if someone has fairly wide head might want to try and make it flip. But if you can get your head in the hole there is alot of room inside this helmet.

Also flattered you put PGHFETT/skygunbro Barc but Mike did all the hard work I just sling the resin and fg lol.

The most aggravating thing about the BS helmets ( I thought) was although there is a "joint" for the face to flip, the engineering behind the helmets curve/joint is not correct and that is why the helmet doesn't flip up correctly and is sloppy when it does. The BS bucket has to flip up due to the tight curves on the bottom of the mouth/chin area which is very narrow.

The BARC helmets joint - if made to look like the helmet in the movie - would never open if engineered in such a manner.

What I'm saying is if you want it to look like the movie helmet it can't open. If you want it to open, you will have to give up some (movie) accuracy. It would have to be a complex joint that can cause the faceplate to come forward and up in the same motion. I tried to make the joint movie accurate and workable but it pinched at the top every time, limiting the "lift" of the face plate so much it wasn't worth doing it.

As Mike pointed out before the CGI artists didn't bother with real life physics of costumes too much.

You see these "flaws" in many aspects of the CGI characters in the Prequels.

When the classic trilogy was filmed there were artists doing concepts and prop builders/engineers were trying ot realize it in a functional way.

These days you have concept designers and 3D artists and what I've noticed working with many 3D artists in game design is the fact that many

know how to work out cool CGI stuff but have a lack of real life practicability and/or the details and backgrounds to what they're doing.

And actually they don't have ot bother too much as only a minority of people realize and question these things.

It's like everything in life - everyone witnesses but only a few really reflect about it.

To take up the cudgels for the artists....

It's still possible that the helmet was meant to be made of seperate pieces - not nceessarily "flip wise"

but similar to Darth Vader's helmet - just two hlaves that have ot be connected somehow.

Be it for maintnance reasons or to get into the helmet....who knows and who cares ;)

I guess if we would make a Q/A session with the designers of the characters you'd be surprised how little background

some production studios put into their projects as long as it works in the big picture.

Still I'd be interested what they would answer - but they'd do better not to grant such an opportunity to me ;)
