PeaceForEndor
Hello, I ordered my SC armor about a week ago and Jeff said it should ship within 4-5 weeks, and i have some questions. 1.) How good is this kit? I heard amazing things about it from people on FB and saw it's highly regarded here. 2.) How well does it fit together and are the instructions any good? 3.) Is there any modifications needed to put the fabric through? I know this kit is pre-trimmed but just curious. 4.) How good is the velcro straps that comes with it? Thanks for your time! (And your answers )
stasz
1.) SC's kit solid. Readily available without months upon months and fairly accurate. 2.) Between the included instructions, the resources and build threads here, and your own creativity you shouldn't have a hard time getting it harnessed up and wearable. 3.) It's "rough-trimmed" but that's almost an insult to how much work they already do for you. Cleaning up some edges, perhaps widening some of the strap pass-through slots, and any tweaks to for your body type are pretty much all the necessary trimming. 4.) My Velcro is holding strong after almost two years. It might vary depending on how you decide to suit up, but I rarely unhook it. Just slide the parts up my arms and legs. The Velcro on my belt takes the most beating but if it's sewn on well, the Velcro itself should hold fine. The adhesive Velcro, I threw a dap of e6000 on too for extra security.

What grit sandpaper would be best to to sand down some of the rough edges and what tool would be best to cut out slots if they aren't big enough? I have both curved and straight lexan scissors. stasz
I used this flexible 220 grit I found at home depot: It's got a rubber type backing, so you can roll it, fold it, and it doesn't crack apart. Then finished with a quick hit of 400-600. I used a rat tail file to elongate the strap slots.
JMC
I used a Dremel for most of my trimming and shaping with a light grit to clean up after. Best advice I can give is read a couple of build threads 3 times, measure everything 4 times, and fit test each piece before permanently attaching anything. Mistakes can be corrected with some effort, but best to make as few as possible with some preparation. Another great tool is to head to reach out to your local garrison/squad and ask about upcoming armor parties and see if any scouts would bring their kit and discuss there build with them, ask about what they did for various pieces and what they wished they had done differently.

I'm a smaller person (5'7) so I was considering cutting the straps themselves of them were too big

I looked at my Garrison roster and it doesn't look like very many people in it are in my state. They're almost all in Texas somewhere
stasz
Not much. Less than a 1/4". You're not going to need to "thin" the straps any, and if you're considering Lancer (level II approval) now or down the road, the straps have to be particular widths. You'll be fine with the width of the elastic SC sends, but cut to length obviously.
AnasaziActual
I LOVE my SC Armor...I needed to do very little trimming/sanding, but did need to expand a few holes for the strapping...overall a very good set of armor with easy assembly. I even bought a Shadow Scout set from him, just haven't had time to get it built yet.

Jeff said he's supposed to get the plastic in on the 23rd and that it will be 4-5 weeks before I get my order

stasz
Yeah, the straps just need to be cut to length. The widths you'll receive will work fine. Again, between the included instructions and by studying other build threads, you'll be able to see what goes where easily. And if you're not sure, just ask!
