Helmet Questions

Hello there! I have a few questions about the helmet that is displayed below. Note: These are not my photos, they're from the seller I'm getting the set from.

 

First off, can anyone recognize who the maker of the helmet is? Second, what are changes that you guys recommend I make? I know the brow is too thick, and the visor look rather small.

 

I'm planning on getting another helmet as well, perhaps using this one as backup or display piece.

To be honest with you, I don't think there are any changes you could make to that helmet to get it approved. I've seen those on eBay and they're really inaccurate

You're probably not going to like what I've got to say.

 

This is not a good helmet. As you've noted, the visor is very thick, the lenses are small and out of shape. I don't know the maker but I've seen this on bucket eBay several times over the years. There is a listing right now that says it's an MLC. It's not.

 

I honestly don't know if you could even salvage it. It's not really a matter of changing this greeblie or adjusting that angle. The whole thing is way out of whack. Snout is too long, snout greeblie is wrong, snout decal is oversized, visor decal is wrong. You don't have a profile picture, but if you see it in that view, it has a very dramatic angle to it that's incorrect.

 

As a GML I wouldn't approve this helmet. It's just too far off.

I completely understand. I knew purchasing the kit the helmet wouldn't get approved. I got a set from a buddy in the 501st, and the helmet was just part of a larger set. Are there any helmet options you'd recommend that are pre built, or that are pretty straight forward to assemble?

Understand, my comments above are my opinion. I would highly recommend reaching out to one of the Star Garrison GMLs for their take on it.

 

This is of course, all under the assumption that you're looking to join the 501st.

If you have a stroll through the helmet forum, you'll find thread upon thread of discussion on the attributes of various makers. Some of the more reputable, readily available, and "approvable" makers are KS, SC, Altmann's, MLC, LW, RS, and Chef. Some of those can be had in a week or so and some are rare jewels in the scout world

They all have variations, subtle differences, slightly different sizing... There are some newer players as well not as well known, and some cases of decent stuff but horror stories with shipping and receiving.

 

The best thing you can do is what you're doing now: read read read, and ask questions. We're here to help!

Oh absolutely. I'm actually building a snow scout, and I was wondering if you could look at the rest of the kit (for scout pieces, chest needs some slight modifications I know of) and let me know what needs changing? I'm getting everything except soft goods.

 

I'm not currently looking to get past 501st approval with the snow scout, I'm currently working on an AT-AT to get in. I'll be working more on this scout to get it approved after my AT-AT. I'd just like to make it look decent until then, and get an approved bucket.

The only other scout pieces you're going to have are the back armor, knees and belt. From these pics the knees look ok, back armor / tank / tank topper SEEM ok, but I'd need better pics, hard to see the belt but it seems to hit the mark. The boxes on the belt look a little long, but I don't think it's a deal breaker. At a glance the shoulder bells look ok, can't see the the forearms well, but the greeblies on the chest are off and the lights look too big, so yeah the chest needs some work for sure.

Thank you for looking! I have some close ups on the pieces if you want a look. As for the chest piece, I'm already looking into getting some new lights and decals for the front.

I know that costume. I would avoid it! The asking price is high and not worth it. The chest is a fiberglass recast of a MC. The rest of the parts are WTF and SC. Also that rattle can weathering is a biker scout not a snowy of any kind. We have a greasy look ") not trying to be rude,but just leave it alone.

I understand this, personally, this is a project suit. I'd like to work on it, maybe replace some things. This isn't a costume to get approved for the 501st, at least not yet. I'm currently working on my AT-AT, which will be 501st, then move onto this to make it 501st approved. I can't stand the helmet though, so I'm going to get an Altmann, maybe weather it to match the armor.

Yes,I've seen it. The guy is in my Garrison. I'm just gonna be blunt about it,not toward you ,but the setup. All your really getting is a SC back with hump. WTF forarm armour,belt and hand plates. The chest is a recast of MC. I'm just trying to save you in the long run. Also the greeblies are wrong as is the square lights. You would also have to repaint the armour. Again I'm just trying to warn you about what your getting into. Me I would pass. There's always snowy armour parts for sale on the forum or Blizzard Force. Also there's a couple of vendors that will sell individual snowy parts. Same with SC.

I completely understand and I appreciate it when people are blunt, I like that. Also, I'm aware of the chest, I'm already researching the greeblies, those are pretty simple to change. The AT-AT has many greeblies, lol.

 

I've already purchased the set, probably should've done more research, but what is done is done. I don't have buyers remorse, I know what I've gotten into with it. However, I'm really looking forward to getting to fix it up and make it look nice. The seller is making some soft goods for me as well, so all I need to technically complete it is a new helmet, boots, jumpsuit and some greeblies for the chest. I'll be looking into a new chest though, since it is fiberglass.
