I hate it when this happens. Last year a found a guy recasting my stuff and Andy (evo3) helmets out in the Philippines.

How can you tell a recast? I'm asking because I wouldn't have been able to tell. Do the makers leave some sort of signature that helps a buyer know it's a recast.

Was about to ask a similar question. While I tend to side with membership, I'd like to know what sort of proof or recasting there is as good measure to ensure we're not wrongfully going after someone. Feel free to PM Command if you'd prefer to keep it private.

I was looking for one certain, rather prominent bump and couldn't find it.

Not to criticize you in any way, but why do you think it is a BSP?

BSP have produced a very particular looking helmet including a moulded lens piece. I am very familiar with this helmet as I have one, and have posted a paint tutorial for it on forums. Their helmet is 3d printed and cast in resin producing the sharpest looking helmet on the market to date. You could not get this detail in a sculpted helmet cast in fibreglass. If you look at his listing there is no mention of how it was produced. I have messaged him through his Facebook page calling him out on it and I have been blocked with no response. I do not know of any artists who work in secret on projects like this then suddenly bring them to market. The helmet in his eBay pictures is cast from resin. This is not the fibre glass helmet you would receive if you bought it. A 3rd generation cast from the original made of fibreglass would be a lot softer and some areas of detail would be problematic.....total scumbag he also has just started selling fibreglass Biker Scout buckets so maybe you guys can work out if they are also recasts. I am not an expert on those helmets as i suspect you folk may be.

I have messaged Back Stage Props about the seller and they have confirmed it is their helmet. They are currently trying to identify the buyer who may have purchased the helmet from them to recast. They only have his address details to go from and no name. I may well message command. I apologise I do not know the correct procedure for reporting this kind of thing. Thank you.

Just would like to second Retrofire and Nexous have been saying. Even if there are strong indications the burden of proof rests on the prosecution. Thus I would like to ask you to provide comparison pictures to support your claim so that our members don't just have to take your word for it but can draw their own conclusions.

Not to sh!tcan your claims of recasting...

 

But achieving incredibly sharp detail with GRP (fibreglass) is just as equally possible as it is with resin.

 

After all, GRP is just glass fibre strands encased in.... Resin!

 

That's the one advantage of using GRP over vac forming. The detail that can be achieved is much sharper.

 

 

 

 

As for his Scout lid...

Difficult to say, it has very similar looking proportions and detail to an SC bucket.

Interestingly, I would hazard that it's a recast of a vac-formed helmet because the detail is very weak, which is what you naturally get with vac forming (and subsequently taking a mould from the outside of it).

Certainly in an around the ears with a back/cap style forming.

 

With GRP, it's possible to eliminate all these, so why wouldn't you... Unless you don't want the 'work'.

Recasted helmet.

The recasted helmet fails to add details where BSP failed to include them. The gutters under the eyes are not present. The black lower eyelids are not present. The black band behind the forehead does not step out as it should. The recasted helmet replicates the inaccuracy of the BSP. If you are going to make a helmet this accurate why repeat the same mistakes as another sculptor. These finer details are now well known about the shore trooper helmet. I may also dare to add that whoever painted the recasted helmet followed my paint tutorial as the exact methods I used are employed here to achieve the end finish. As you can see from the images above the 2 helmets are identical almost down to the paint application.

The BSP helmet has a too narrow edge to the brim of the forehead on the right side. It tapers towards the end.

 

The recast also has this present.

It definitely appears to be a rip off to me. Two things that throw BSP's helmet off for me are the lack of the black eye section, and the shape of the "under-eye bags" being a bit too thick (imo) This helmet matches those and every other shape on the helmet about perfectly, as far as I can tell from pictures.

 

Dude's facebook page has zero in progress photos. And his ebay pages all say this "I'm refunding and canceling all not send orders after opening any kind of dispute/case against me with no exceptions."

 

I'll be happy to say I'm wrong if proof is provided, but personally I would avoid this guy.

Thanks for the education. I remember reading that some makers will place "tells" on their pieces that only they know about to identify their work in cases like this.
