quite some time back, four years or so, I painted a scout faceplate, and painted the black surround approximately 1/3 up the inner edge. I was told this was wrong and had to redo it.

I havent really been able to tell from photos exactly how far up this should extend.

is there a consensus, or does it just come down to the GML?

1/3 sounds pretty good. It varies a bit on the screen used helmets. There are also some where only the inner area of the snout is painted black but I prefer to paint them with a small overlap as well.

It should end where the edges ends to hear some tell it. Then it comes down to what helmet your using. I go just a touch pass 1/3. MLC doesn't look right with only a 1/3 of the edge painted. My LW is around 1/3.

2 armourers and 'almost' the same answer, lol.

But seriously, this should neither affect basic nor Lancer approval.

Edit: I'll try to upload some reference pictures later to exemplify.

The edge can be confusing. I went off screen granbs and older members helmets. The main reason I saw some years back a seller was selling helmets finished and the it was painted all the way up to the edge followed by a another member who was selling a highly detailed helmet and it was painted around 1/3 of the edge in turn got me to wondering. Now the only one that looks odd without the entire edge finished is the MLC helmets.

Aw geez... I painted mine right up to the inflection point of the snout.

Your not the first or the last. I've seen it a many of times at basic and lancer.

I always tell my scouts to paint the black bit so that the edge is halfway across the front of the snout edge, much like the above photos. The paint should really not stop at the inside edge of the snout.
