Greedo10360
Tossing this here too because it likely gets more traffic and visibility than my build thread. Started to work on my flight suit and trying to figure out the riding patches. They seem to be a bit challenging, so I'm working on a template first out of shipping paper (use what you have, right?). Here is my first effort. It seems to match the photos online but I wanted to see about getting input from anybody that knows. Please let me know your input. The top of the template is right underneath the belt that will be right at my waist line. Too big? Too small? Too wide? Any help would be appreciated. If you want me to pin them to the suit and see where they fit while being worn, I could do that too. Thanks!
BikerScout007
It's upside down. The curving part should be on the thigh and the straight part across the crotch

Thanks for the input. I'll hammer together another effort and see if it's better! Thanks again!
Greedo10360
Here is version 2.0 of the possible riding patches template. Thank you everybody for your feedback and after hours (maybe a slight exaggeration) of pouring over Lancer requests, I have trimmed and come up with this: The bottom of the template would be just above my kneecap. There seems to be a good deal of variation on lancer requests as to how high up the suede would go, probably because it is covered, but I want to be as correct as possible. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks again!

Greedo10360
Ran in to a bit of a setback with the flight suit today. It is rather thick and in doing a test run to see if I could fit it in a sewing machine, there is just no way that I can get the machine to work down the leg, as there is so much material that needs to get out of the way, especially when you get further down the thigh. May need to investigate any of the folks on here that are much more experienced at sewing to see if they can take on a commission to just add the patches. I really like this flight suit and the fit, and the cuffed wrists and ankles, so I don't really want to scrap the whole thing. I did make progress on removing the patch and the epaulets, so all was not lost. Back to doing more research!
Dart
Before you go stitching that on, be sure that it's far out enough on your thigh (the front edge should be at the middle front of your thighs). You can cheat a bit by splitting the legs on the pants down the outside seam, and then stitch the riding patches down. Afterwards, just re-stitch the outer seam and you're good to go.
stasz
Yep. I put my patches on with the legs split open. I was taking the legs in anyway so it wasn't a huge deal. But it made it a lot easier. Canterbury Tail
Stitching the Riding Patches on is the hardest part of making the entire outfit I found. Even worse when you need to completely redo them. But yeah, split the legs and sew and go slowly. Also piece of advice, stitch up the leg as depending on your suede it may stretch slightly as it's stitched so you can end up with some bulging of it where stitching lines come together. So make that area where you finish the stitching up by your waist where it will be hidden just in case.
