ChDoyle
It seems to me from screen grabs that the whole cumberbund has some padding not just the ribbed section. What's the general consensus on this? In this pic it looks like the velco seem has padding and the rest of the cumberbund for that matter based on the rounded forms of the shadows created by the bulging material. As usual if there is already a thread about this just point me in the right direction and I'll delete this one). Thanks!

I agree with you, the padding or batting seems to be all over the bund, not just in the ribs.
kayelbe
I just assumed it was...it looks that way to me. Would love to find it wasn't, though. Wearing a homemade half-parka in the Arizona heat ain't no fun
ChDoyle
I 'studied' the scenes this evening and it seems to me there was one suit (the first one?) made with extra padding in the cumberbund because 'it' appears a couple of times. Then there are other versions that appear to have no padding. One thing I did do to my cumberbund after seeing the screen versions was squeeze it with elastic bands to give it (eventually) the correct 'used horizontal folds' shape that all the film versions have. Optionally you could wear it for a month and the same folds would appear I'm sure.
Retrofire
They do:) Nothing like a worn in bund!
Strider
The padding definitively goes all around and the ribs are just the padding stitched over. I found it difficult however to decide on the right amount of padding as in some scenes (e.g. the one above on the speeder bike) the padding seems to be quite thick while in other scenes, particularly when you look at the ribbed part, the padding seems to be super thin. Another observation is that the cummerbund does not seem to contain any stiffening material since we can see that it folds a lot wheres the cod piece seems so stiff that it bends when attached to the back of the cummerbund.
