Greedo10360
Hello everybody, Starting a scout trooper and thought I would start a thread to help me through the process. I've ordered the armor and helmet and the armor should be here in a few weeks and the helmet is probably a few months away. In the mean time, I've been picking up the soft parts (as permitted on the credit card!). I have my gloves from Wampa Wear and ordered a balaclava. I was eyeballing this jump suit and was curious if anybody has any thoughts. I'll need to remove the epaulets and the patch thing, but I like that the neck likely doesn't need altering. Any input? http://thumbs3.picclick.com/d/w1600/pict/152018276130_/New-Adult-SFI-32a-1-Certified-Single-Layer-Racing.jpg Today, I purchased the suede that I'll need and I need to pick up the elastic strapping (easy enough to find). Otherwise, I think I'll have the boots and cumberbund/pouches made but I want the flight suit first, so I can dial in the sizing. Also, I need the flak vest and may learn to sew and make that myself, which my mom is excited about. Anyway, let me know if anybody has any thoughts on the flight suit above. Thanks!
BikerScout007
Hey Michael A couple of members have inquired about that suit, but I know of no one who is currently using it. Most of us use the Red Kap coveralls. Just looking at it nothing really glaring jumps out as wrong, but you would have to let us know how it works for you. It's always great to have more options!
tk1234
Hey Micheal, Congrats on the purchase of the undersuit. I bought the exact same one on eBay for $25.00. The coveralls are absolutely perfect. The upper arm patch came off with no issues. And you're correct, the epaulets will need to come off. What I like the best is it has the correct collar and I especially like the elastic cuffs on the legs and arms. And I don't find the material to be too heavy and hot to wear. They won't slide up. I had to split the leg seams to sew the riding patches on. You made an excellent choice.

At least I can work on this while the armor is on a slow boat from Australia! Lol
Greedo10360
Well, I went ahead and bought the flight suit above. I like the idea of not being flammable! Lol I also ordered and received my suede. There's a company in Portland called Tandy Leathers, and it was pretty reasonable. Once the suit gets here, I'll get started on the mudflap and suede patches. In the mean time, my armor and helmet should be shipped in a week or so, and I'm excited to get started on that. More updates and perhaps some pictures (and probably lots of questions) in the next few weeks!
Greedo10360
Flight suit came today. Thank you ebay! The size/fit is pretty good and it isn't too hot. It's a bit heavy, but that's not a terrible thing. It's dry clean only, which I would have assumed once I add the suede to it anyway. Here is my test fitting. Here is a closer image of the neck: I liked this flight suit because it had the neck collar already completed and that's one less thing for me to learn how to sew. I'll need to remove the patch and the epaulets, but does anybody have any feedback? Look good?

Greedo10360
Started to work on my flight suit and trying to figure out the riding patches. They seem to be a bit challenging, so I'm working on a template first out of shipping paper (use what you have, right?). Here is my first effort. It seems to match the photos online but I wanted to see about getting input from anybody that knows. Please let me know your input. The top of the template is right underneath the belt that will be right at my waist line. Too big? Too small? Too wide? Any help would be appreciated. If you want me to pin them to the suit and see where they fit while being worn, I could do that too. Thanks!
Greedo10360
Got some great feedback and am going to take another swing at it soon. Thanks everybody for helping!
Greedo10360
Here is version 2.0 of the possible riding patches template. Thank you everybody for your feedback and after hours (maybe a slight exaggeration) of pouring over Lancer requests, I have trimmed and come up with this: The bottom of the template would be just above my kneecap. There seems to be a good deal of variation on lancer requests as to how high up the suede would go, probably because it is covered, but I want to be as correct as possible. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks again!
jabbasdead
I see CJ posted his template. You come down to Corvallis ever? I might have a CB you could try on. I can host an armor party to if you want to learn how to make your boots.

I should have my armor and helmet in the next few weeks too.
Greedo10360
Ran in to a bit of a setback with the flight suit today. It is rather thick and in doing a test run to see if I could fit it in a sewing machine, there is just no way that I can get the machine to work down the leg, as there is so much material that needs to get out of the way, especially when you get further down the thigh. May need to investigate any of the folks on here that are much more experienced at sewing to see if they can take on a commission to just add the patches. I really like this flight suit and the fit, and the cuffed wrists and ankles, so I don't really want to scrap the whole thing. I did make progress on removing the patch and the epaulets, so all was not lost. Also, I finished sewing the liner for my TK bin: At least I managed some progress! StoutScout
I sewed on my patches by hand. It's either that or ripping the seam of the leg open to sew the patch on. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk

StoutScout
Nick, is there a certain type of stitch that you used or do you have a close up picture of the stitching? Thanks! I just did a simple running stitch as described in this video: Here is a close-up of how mine turned out. It's not pretty but unless someone is really close and staring at my crotch they won't notice.

Greedo10360
Well, I mothballed the racing suit for now. Still going to work on it but ordered one from Max's Sci Fi in the mean time. And HOT DIGGITY, look what came in the mail today! My Altmann's armor and bucket! The lense on the bucket popped out in shipping, so I got right to it. I just love this helmet and it is huge inside, so I can't wait to start working on it. I ran out and started buying elastic and velcro. I then re-read Pandatroopers build thread. Lots to do!
spike
well this did do a big trip!! the eye lense is hot glued in and can pop out if knocked around, easy fit back in, apply "super/crazy"glue to the hotglue where it touchs the inside of the face plate and press firmly for a few seconds, I prefer Loctite 406, its for hard to glue surfaces like metal look forward to the build cheers
Retrofire
I love my Altmann bucket! Look forward to seeing that armor come together.
Greedo10360
Started working on the easy parts while I wait for some additional supplies. Got a few straps for the forearms ready to sew. This is 1" elastic. Moved on the checking out the biceps, but they need 1 3/8 inch elastic, which I have ordered but don't have yet. In looking at them, the greeblies are the same. Shouldn't one of them have the dots on the other side? Perhaps a veteran builder can opine. I also checked out my thermal detonator and it looks like the greeblies on the left are upside down? An easy enough fix if so, just thought I'd throw it out there first, that's why I have this thread, after all!
StoutScout
The greeble on the TD is correct with the two rectangles at the top (like you have it). If you are using pandatrooper's thread as a reference for this piece, his picture has it upsidedown.
Retrofire
The "tbits" on the bicepts are not correct. Good catch! You can either get some after market bits or you could take a razor saw trim off the bottom, turn it around a reglue it. Shoot Spike a PM and let him know too as I bet he'll want to get that corrected. It looks like an easy fix.
spike
". In looking at them, the greeblies are the same. Shouldn't one of them have the dots on the other side?" if someone can show a pic of both sides of the bicep from a LFL exibit that would clear that up,pics I have dont have any" T" greeblie part on the bicep, for now I think this maybe a car/auto part and may not have a right and left variation. check my armour build for more on that http://forum.bikersc...showtopic=14282 my reference cheers
