Helmet Mic

Hey guys

I've been away for a while, working on my armour in my spare time, but I'm almost done! Now I want to talk about helmet mics. I'm thinking of getting the iComm (http://store.voicebooster.com/icomm-imperial-communication-system) and the accompanying Aker Amplifier (http://store.voicebooster.com/voicebooster-mr1506-aker-10watt-voice-amplifier/). I'll then secure the amplifier to the front chest plate (Like the TKs did at White armor (http://i1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg556/bigironvault/IMG00400-20120905-1533.jpg))and use the VOX to speak.

What do you use? How do you secure it? Anyone else got any recommendations? It'll set me back about £120 ($150) plus shipping but from what I hear it's worth it.

Regards,

Stormy

I have a 10 (or 12) watt Aker. Can't remember off the top of my head ;) and I use a Radio Shack headworn mic. I run the mic cable under my collar flap, vest, and it comes out just under the right edge of my chest armor and ducks right into the pouch where the speaker suits very nicely. The mic is a little more sturdy than the wire frame type that is included with the aker.

The icomm set up is cool, but it's worth noting that Scouts didn't have the TK style static burst before speaking.

Some troops don't use anything at all, but I like the the light natural distortion the amp gives, and people always get a kick out of it when they hear your voice a little more "robot-y" for lack of a better term.

I'd say if you want it, go for it! It's not something that would impact your approval. I suppose a CO might question it at a Canon event (in the same way you can't carry a sniper rifle at a Canon event) but honestly even that's unlikely.

icomm are a lot more than a basic aker setup too, but it's your loot, Trooper!

Static burst is not allowable for Lancer, although we rarely evaluate scout sound systems.

I got the Aker for $40. It came with a mic. As was stated above, you can hide the wire under your soft goods.

Like I said, most of us just use the Aker. I keep the speaker in my left pouch and run the wire under my bund. Thinking about moving the speaker into my chest piece though, because I dont like the way my pouch sags with the Aker in it.

And also, we have not, to my knowledge, evaluated a Lancer applicant's speaker set up so in this case I'd say don't ask, don't tell.

People love hearing the voice using the icomm/aker setup. When it's in your pouch people don't realize that it's not coming from your helmet and it allows for easier volume adjustments than if it's in the chest.

If you go for the icomm, message him instead of purchasing on the site, he will give a small discount to 501st members. $5 or $10 I think.

There is a new entry as well, there's a free app called TKVoice. I haven't looked into it recently but it requires a specific set of cables/splitter in order to split the one headphone jack into a mic input and speaker output.

Okay I've seen a few headset -> Phone -> Aker setups. I might look into that but I can't really afford my phone croaking on a troop!

I'm actually not 501st yet - still got Boots and a few touch-ups to do on my armour. That, and I'm under 18 ;(

Still,

Thanks very much for your suggestions guys. Really appreciate advice from the pros ;)
