Measuring for Elastic and Side Closures

Recommended Posts

Hi all! A few questions:

1. What have you found to be the most effecting way of measuring how much elastic to use for the the arms and knees - and in particular the extra riveted elastic on the knee?

2. About how much elastic should be used on the T-strip elastic, reaching down to the shoulder bells? I'm afraid of making too much or too little distance..

3. On the side closures I plan on making two sets, one set with elastic and one set with the white cotton webbing. About how far apart should the back and front plates be on the sides when measured out? And on the Lancer CRL it suggests combining webbing and elastic for the side closure - has anyone done that? If you have, then how?

Sorry for all the questions - thank you!

Once you have the chest/back assembled and have the shoulder area bridged (even if it's just taped) you can get a really good idea of the amount of webbing for the chest-to-back. Note that you will be wearing a Flak Vest, Cummerbund, Jumpsuit that will add thickness, not a lot, but it'll add some.

Wearing your jumpsuit and with the help of someone you can have them place the knee plate in the correct spot and then wrap elastic around the back of your knee.

My recommendation is to skip the T-Strap completely and just sew velcro into your Flak Vest once you've dialed in the position.

That measurement is completely based on your body size, there is no real "golden" number. Ideally you want your chest / back connection at the top to be touching and then the bottom should open up as much as needed to fit you.

I can definitely say don't just go straight across from point A to point B. Did that my first go on the knee armor and could barely bend my leg!

I made that mistake on my top 0.5" strap then I had to remove the rivets and do it again. Recommend that you fit check before you rivet or cut the elastic to size.

If you add velcro to your jumpsuit, you can get away with slightly looser straps because they won't be the main fastening method. Plus, the armour won't move around on you.

If it helps you any, my entire group did 12 inches and 9 inches for all the straps. You lose about 1/2 inch if you use snaps on the inside, but otherwise these dimensions worked on all of us, ranging from 5' - 6' and like Dart said, adding velcro on your knees and biceps especially will help hold them in place regardless of fit.
