Vindicus' Scout WIP

Is this the right spot to post my WIP?

Greetings everyone. So after wanting to become a scout trooper for about seven years now, I'm finally going to do it. I'm not new to costuming, I've made costumes for other SW costume groups, but this is my first time doing a vacuum formed armor kit. So it will be a new experience working with that.

My armor came in the mail today, I'm excited to start this. Some of the armor seems a little big on me though, I don't know if they're suppose to be that big, to fit over the under suit, or if I'm going to have to trim and/or reheat and form them. But the chest, back and biceps seem to be sized nicely...

Anyway, excited to start this :D

Yep this is the place. Having a build thread is the best way to get advice and ask questions so you're off to a great start!

Thank you.

I took some photos of some of my armor (terribly) taped to my arm and my knees to determine if they are too large, need cutting/trimming, need to be reheated, etc. I don't know if you can tell by the photos so well or not, but the elbow and shoulder kinda hang off my arm on the sides. So any feedback on what you guys think will be much appreciated.

This image you can see it hanging off my leg on the sides.

I took another pic to show it from a front and side view perspective to see if the size it correct.

Also when I took the tape off some of the pieces and I noticed yesterday as well, there seems to be a thin like plastic on top of the armor, and it's peeling a little. I don't know if this is important or not, or if I can just peel it off?

Hi Jared! May I ask what maker you purchased your armor from? The pieces look to me to be a bit over sized on you.

Here's a side pic of me in my armor made by SC:

I'm about 5'8" tall and my armor overlaps a bit but wearing the soft armor (flight suit, cummerbund, vest, gloves) bulks you out some. My arm armor overlaps (around my arm) a bit but it's not excessive. I did a little trimming on the shoulder armor but nothing to the bicep or forearm armor. The same is true for the knees. It looks like they go too far up towards the thigh.

The armor will definitely need to have the edges trimmed of the flash and sanded down to give it a clean look. You can do this with a pair of lexan scissors and some 220 grit sandpaper. Not sure what the thin plastic on top of the armor might be. Could be a protective covering of some sort that just needs to be peeled off but I'd rather one of the detachment Armourer's answer that question.

Some plastics have a really thin clear covering over, rather like cling film.

This is a protective covering and needs to be peeled off.

If it's anything else.... Then I am at a loss.

This is what it is. I'll peel it off, thank you.

Peter

I bought the armor off of ebay. And I'm 5'8" as well, to put it in perspective. I'm thinking for the shoulder if I trim it then reheat it with a heat gun I can get it to match my body better; but like you said the soft armor will bulk me up a bit so it's tough to know how much space the soft armor will fill up.

The Bicep fits my arm nicely, so if the length is correct then that is all set.

And as for the elbows I have no idea what to think for that, can't really trim it in and re heat, and I can't tell if it's the right length either. And the knees I might have them in the wrong spot, I have my kneecap in the crevasse right before it comes back... OR why it might look like it's goes up too far on the thighs may be due to the sweatpants I'm wearing. They are really baggy and so in pictures like the one above, it will seem like my knees are higher than they actually are.

Jared hi, Is there anyone in New York that could give you a hand, I have a fair idea which kit you may have and you will need to do some cleaning up, or even replacing.

Could you also show us the detonator that clips on the belt, that will confirm which one it is.

You may need to redo your cummberbund, there are no seams running up and down the cod piece and along the bottom of the bun.

Though you did a good job for your first effort. Here is a photo of my third cummberbun to give you an idea.

I was going to redo the cod piece anyway so that's good. I like this much better.

Why does it matter if there's a seam at the bottom of the cummerbund? The whole thing is going to be covered by a belt anyway.

And here is my detonator. It's not trimmed yet.

Thanks for the photo..its not the kit I thought, which is a good thing for you.

Yes it might be covered and it might not but its in the movie and its worth while to change it just in case :) here is a photo a Scout from the movie, you can see the bottom of his cummberbun. Also on this forum there are a few photos of the back of the Scout on a bike clearly showing no Seam.

That is good news.

Well I will leave it how it is for now, I think I made it big enough that it will always stay covered. And upon time to take pictures of the finished costume, if it's still an issue I'll gladly remake it, as I know more about making them now than I did when I started. :D

  • 2 weeks later...

So my Red Kap coveralls came finally! And well um, they're a little... tight. Is this normal? Are they suppose to be this tight? And it's also choking me (not to the point that I can't breath, but just not comfotable) if I button it up all the way...

Also how do I attach the pouches to my cummerbund?

The fit looks good. If you are planning to do the mods yourself, you can add a snap to make the top closure more fitting. Or, if you take them in for alterations, have the snap added. Since you'll need to have the collar altered to mandarin style, that's your best bet.

Excellent thank you. I was thinking that might be a possibility for me to do... But what about the tightness, it's tight going right up into my groin; are the Red Kap suits just made like that?

That's also what I was thinking, but I didn't know if it would work. Thank you for reassuring me though.

It's weird though, when I put the cummerbund on it doesn't really bother me as much as it does without it. Weird.

And speaking of cummerbunds, I've seen pictures of the pouches with a flap that's attached to the cummerbund, is this how it's put on, or that just a preference thing?

Very good, thanks for clearing that up. I'll add the pouches on tomorrow, and probably will post pics.

I was also poking around the forums and saw a few things that I'm not confused about =P

Am I suppose to use rivets for the belt? Or is that also preference? I mean I'm going to have to get a riveter anyway for the boots (and possibly helmet IDK) And I also saw something that rivets are used for the knees... Don't know if that's also a preference/for lancer, or if it's mandatory, and I don't even know where they would go...
