Whilst over at RPF, I was reading the thread about the problems with the Efx Scout helmet and the reasons for the delay.

One of the suggested reasons was the painting at the factory was wrong- gloss where it should be matt and vice versa.

I wasn't aware there were different finishes of the white paint on the Scout helmets. Can anyone add any information to this, as I'd like to go back and do a repaint of my bucket, if indeed there were variations in the finish.

Hope someone can shed some light on this.

I'm sticking with matt. The gloss is wrong I think. That can be a debate.

Hahahahahahaha

I think the post (that had come originally from Efx) was suggesting there were 2 whites on the helmet - gloss and matt.

Seems strange the original prop makers would have gone to that much trouble when finishing the helmets.

Even the pictures of screen used buckets don't appear to show variations.

Well eFX also has an issue where their helmets are hybrid fiberglass and ABS. Maybe they need to paint one portion of it one way the other portion another way

Yes I'm sure I will be corrected or someone will say "Nope that's BS" fiberglass and abs act differently from one another when it comes to paint. I know I've tested to see. You'll have a more gloss on the abs than the fiberglass. So yeah I see the point.

But why in the hell did they make the TB lids like that? I mean either fiberglass or abs. I assume it came down to assembly.

I wish I could remember. Once I tried it on and realized the fiberglass wouldnt give enough to get around my big head, I kinda gave up on it. hahahaha

Interesting point. What were the screen used kids made of? From the pics it looks like ABS. It would seen to me that the finish comes down to the time and attention to detail you put into a lid. I'm reworking a KS lid and I've learned that a good finish comes from a lot of wet sanding, priming, wet sanding, repeat...until you achieve the finish. I'll bet that level of effort wasn't out into the screen lids. I mean look how they assembled the tanks! They slapped them together and shot them with paint and got them on the set.

Yep some guys grab a bucket slap a couple of heavy coats on it and call it good. I've mirrored a couple of biker scout helmets including my first on I have on in my avatar pic. Yep the lids were abs. The five parts were joined then painted white I'm thinking matt maybe even a satin. It had vey little shine. I've been working on a set of MC armor knocking the shine down to match my RS more which I probably just end up spraying painting it. To most people have only painted with krylon they paint will spoil you when it comes to dry times and so on. It took me a month to paint my wife's TI bucket yes that's a while but worth it in the end!

There are 2 EFX helmets to be made: the LE made entirely of fiberglass and Legend made of ABS. No combo of the 2 according to older posts of Gino and Bryan.

Ah okay. I remember hearing awhile back that the faceplate was ABS and the rest of the lid fiberglass or something like that.

But the bottom line for now is...there are NO eFX scout lids. Fiberglass, ABS or otherwise.

Just fyi, the originals were glossy. The thing about the matte vs gloss was a factory mishap on one of their samples.

That clears that one up, then.

Couldn't understand why the prop guys would've painted it in two different finishes.

Shame RS decided to go the matt route...sigh!!

It may have just been a mess up. You can spray gloss very lightly and slow and end up with a matt finish. Weather can play a roll in it to. Either I'm happy to be getting one. I mean you can also repaint it.

Just to clarify, the screen used helmets were painted gloss white (not high gloss mirror finish but definitely gloss).

Matte white is incorrect.

All the armor was unpainted so you're actually seeing the natural finish of the ABS.

Any update on a possible release date projected for the Scout buckets Gino?

Getting very close now, but no not yet, any official news would come from an EFX email or website update (when the new site goes live very soon), not from me posting on a forum. ;)
