Pouch no visible stitching?

Geographer

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm finally on my last part of my build which are the pouches. I know one of the requirements for the pouches is that there are no visible stitches, but I'm new to sewing and I'm confused on how to do that with the flaps.

I'm using a pattern that calls for tabs on all the sides of pouch, including the flaps. I assume these are there to fold and stitch in order to give a nice, clean edge. Though I can't see a way to do that without the stitches showing on the outside the flap. Anyone have any tips for hiding stitches on the flaps?

I'm out of town right now and can't get a picture of how my pouchs look. Maybe someone will pop in with the answer. I took mine apart and redone them. I would have to have it in front of me to tell you how to do it.

Like Tim said: You sew the flap seams (except for the top edge) with the flap inside out . Turn the flap right side out, press with an iron, and the seams will be tight. Then (depending on the pattern) you sew the flap to the back of the pouch body. The stitches will be inside the flap and not visible. Also, you sew the pouch body in the same way, so that right side out the stitching will be on the inside leaving just a seam.

Looking at Pandatrooper's there I see there are visible stitches around the top hem of the pouch itself. Is this acceptible? I've been able to do everything apart from the top hem so far without visible stitching.

Also where is the no-visible stitching requirement? I don't see it in the CRL or the costume standards listed in the thread http://forum.bikersc...showtopic=9143 Is there another set of standards I need to be aware of that I'm not seeing?

There are usually more than one set of standards for EVERY costume. For a Biker Scout, the CRL you linked to is referred to as "Level 1" or "Basic". Basic is the minimum to get the costume approved. As you point out, there isn't a "no visible stitching" requirement for Basic Approval.

For Scouts, our Level 2 is also called "Lancer". As said, it's more strict. From the LANCER CRL:

- Two pouches made to a suitable scale for your size that are made from a white heavy weight cloth ( off white if using off white drop box/ side armour straps), they should be touching chest armour and slightly overlapping belt. No external stitching around the flaps or velcro attachment should be seen. Bottom edge of the flap must be less than half the overall width of the pouch.

Ah. I don't have access to that CRL, possibly because I'm not a 501 member yet. It would be nice for that to be posted outside a 501 only area so those of us just starting could reference it so we're not remaking stuff unnecessarily.

But thanks for that bit posted. Seems that external stitching is allowed around the top of the pouch but not on the flap itself or velcro areas. I can work with that.

Hi Ben! The Lancer CRL is available to all members of the forum. You just won't be able to submit until you achieve basic approval. Here's the thread: http://forum.bikersc...howtopic=12081. I'm going for Lancer as well so I too need to upgrade my pouches so I'm right there with you!

Are there any Lancers that can post a pic of their pouches for a reference?

Thanks for that Retrofire. I can see the link you posted, but don't have permission for Kayelbe's link. Bookmarked.

Anytime. The one Kayelbe gave you is the same as the one I gave you it's just in the Pathfinder section of the forum so you can't see it yet. It's best to build to Lancer spec from the start so when you do decide to go Lancer most of the work is done. I focused on my hard armor and strapping and made sure my flight suit had the real suede. I have most of it completed but I'll have to upgrade my bund and pouches before I make a run at it. Good on you for going Lancer too!

Thanks for the assist, Peter. I forgot there was one that was "members only". I apologize, Ben, and hope you find what you were looking for!
