Kyuzo Larkin
I was wondering if there are other scouts out there that have put some sort of backing on their hip boxes for making them functional, for carrying things? Like wallets, keys, phones, or maybe extra prop bits, doodads, or even some extra supplies in case of breaks during trooping? If I put backing behind the boxes and a pouch flap cover would that be okay?
stasz
I know it's been discussed, but I can't say for certain that anyone has pulled off a practical way to do it. Problem is that they will lay up against your thighs so accessing anything inside them would likely require taking your belt off. I think most of us utilize the belly pouches for goodies like trading cards, or phone, keys, etc. I made foam board inserts that give the pouches shape, but are still open for my speaker and usually my phone. As long as it didn't alter the exterior look of the boxes (rivets, screws, or anything poking out behind or beneath them) or alter the way they lay/hang then it shouldn't impact approval. I'd love to see what you come up with!
Kyuzo Larkin
maybe if I use a thicker material like canvas and make it slightly ribbed? Hmm...
Dart
maybe if I use a thicker material like canvas and make it slightly ribbed? Hmm... Do you have a rough visual idea of what you'd like to attempt? To be honest, I just use my 2 pouches for anything. When you troop, you don't typically need to carry everything with you since your stuff is locked up in a secured area. I never carry my wallet or phone with me and the only thing in my left pouch is my Aker amp. To each their own, just make sure your solution doesn't impact the exterior of the hip box.
BikerScout007
I asked this same question 2 years ago before realizing it was more of a pain than what it's worth. Between the two chest pouches and the front pockets on the Red Kap suit, I've been able to store everything I've needed to and make my non-Scout trooping buddies jealous in the process!
Kyuzo Larkin
I would like to at least put some kind of flexible backing on the boxes with a flap over it, but if it is too much of a hassle, which looking at what materials I have, I think I'd better leave it alone. Kyuzo Larkin
Though now I'm looking at Aker Amplifiers on amazon, on a separate note... >.>

Thing is, there really isn't a lot of usable space in the back of the boxes. That's about the only reason I didn't do something similar to what you're proposing.
