Altmann Chin Strap & Visor

Recommended Posts

I have an Altmann helmet but the visor does not swing up very far and won't stay open. While this isn't a huge problem since I can still get the helmet on my head with ease, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a way to modify the helmet to get it to open correctly.

Also, how do you attach the chin straps to the Altmann? I noticed that other helmets have slots along the inside "sideburn" where the straps feed through. My helmet is too thin in this area to have any slots. Do I just attach it on the inside of the helmet and call it a day?

* ignore the unpainted bolts.

The fist and second photos show the "sideburn" and how far the visor will open before it gets too tight. I'd rather not push any further and break something.

The third photo shows where it's rubbing along the top when it's open all the way.

looks like the edges of the face cover need to be filed/sanded abit further out but this will leave a larger gap.

you could use velcro on the inside edge to attach a strap for the chin cup or attach your strap to the bolt/nut on either side at the bolts/buttons

Using the bolts or the inside with velcro were the routes I was thinking about. I may try filing the back down just slightly but as you mentioned it might leave too much gap. Ultimately it's not the end of the world if the visor doesn't stay up as long as I can get the helmet on and off easily which I can.

I actually made the slits in mine like the screen used buckets. Here's some info from my WIP thread for you if you decide to go that route Justin:

Since the inside front edges aren't as wide as a screen used bucket, I decided to use 3/4" elastic on the outside. The screen used bucket in the BSN gallery uses 1" elastic. I cut two 1/2" slits on both sides of the front sections. I folded over my 3/4" elastic about an inch and a half and sewed that. I then took the long section of that same elastic and folded it back to the center point of the sewn section. I sewed them together at this point making a "T" shape. After I determined the length I wanted, I cut them and sewed a section of 1" elastic between both t-straps. I attached some velcro to the chin cup for cushioning, and then fed my elastic through. I then pushed the 3/4" ends of the elastic through the top inside slits, down the outside, and then back through the bottom slits. The 1" elastic can't pull through the top slip easily, and the t-strap ends can't pull through the bottom easily.

That's mighty clever. I'll have to take come measurements of my helmet and see how much space I have to work with to make something like this work. Thanks for the great suggestion and pics. Pictures are always very useful.
