I'm New To costuming. I am wondering if the vinyl puckering on my boot will disqualify the boots.

How do these look?

Not looking for Lancer yet, just looking for acceptance into 501st. I've never done any of this before.

Wont pass. You didn't strech them enough. Your gonna have to start over. Either by the "hot car" method or with a heat gun on low. Pin in place & strech as much as possible "cold". Now heat, unpin & pull on 1 side & repin, then do other side. Leave over night & repeat at least 3x. So the streching process will take 3 days. The readon for leaving over night is to let it cool & keep the new shape. Do the same for other boot.

Is there any way to salvage any of the vinyl pieces or the boots at this point?

Posted

The boots themselves should be fine once you peel up the vinyl. Unfortunately, the vinyl is probably toast since it's going to have whatever adhesive you used attached to the back of it. It probably would have a hard time stretching with that already applied.

Just toss all that used vinyl. Buy another yard & start over. Also before you begin pull off as much of the old glue as possible. When you get the vinyl stretched good & tight everything under will show. Don't want any unwanted lumps showing. I see your laces are untied. Did you put on the boot & lace them up so you can slip your foot in & out. Once the vinyl is on you wil not be able to pull on the laces.

Should look like this. 1st strech, 2nd, 3rd & final with excess cut off.

That looks so beautiful! I appreciate the progress images, that way I can see that the wrinkles aren't going to be gone with your first go around.

Yea Chunk is guiding you well. I pulled mine at least 3 times. until i was happy with it and THEN dded the adhesive. Even if you get it not quite as perfect as Chunk's there..you will be able to get it better than the firt go.

Also if you only did the toe areas you should have enough vinyl left to re do them I get 2 pairs of boots out of 1 yard of vinyl with some leftover.

Follow the wise advice of Chunk and DVH. You guys are awesome scouts!

Not heard of not being able to use the laces, mine all function and pull up tight???

Agreed with the guys better to cut your losses and start over at that stage, I use a hot air gun. We just don't get heat here in the cars many days of the year here lol.

2-3 stretches is the norm

I appreciate all you seasoned scouts giving a Newbie some attention. I have ripped off the old Vinyl and will start giving progress shots with each pull and tack like what Chunk offered. First I am trying to put nail polish remover and degreaser on the shoe to try to get some of this excess shoe goo off.

Starting over again! Thanks for the encouragement and helping a guy out. I think I am going to try to make them Lancer Certified this go around. How do I make the soles single colored instead of duo tone? Also what does Lancer Certification offer that regular scouting doesnt?

Pathfinder clearance meets all the basic 501st requirements for approval. The Lancer program goes for more screen accuracy and detail for your costume. It's a program offered by BSN for scouts who want to "step it up". If you achieve Lancer status, you will earn a profile badge and a place on the Lancer page.

What does it mean about splitting the boot in the heel?

Posted

Look at my 2nd pic you can see the heel. The new notch has a line runnimng through it.

First pin day. Now to leave it in car forever!

I'm still not sure about the line running through the boot.

How hot is it in Utah today? I did mine when it was in the 90s & only had the boots in the car for just over an hour. Pull, repin & set overnight. Repete the next 2 days.

Also does it matter what kind of Animal Leather I use for the suede I use for the flight suite in the inner thighs and backside rectangle? I saw a company that has 4ft square pigskin suede for $20

low 70's and sunny today

After the 1st day of stretching and heating material in the car I can already see a vast improvement to what it was. Now i'm leaving in the house to let the material conform to the boots. I'm excited to have some awesome boots!

No doesnt matter. I've made suits with cow, pig & deer hides. You just want the thickness to be 1.5-2 guage. Thicker than 3 & you will have a hard time sewing it.

Will 1.5 gauge sew fine onto regular material? My flight suite feels like a lighter fabric
