Bass
Hello! Started work on my helmet today and took the plunge to do my cuts, I think they look mostly about right... I'd like some input from you folks before I widen anything else. I mostly used the guide stencil for the lens but the shape looked off, so I've penciled in where I think I need to widen the hole. Also curious if I should flare out the ear holes a bit?
Nexous
The ears look fine to me, I know some people like deeper cuts. I would also recommend painting the back of the helmet black prior to assembly, I did it afterwards... was not fun
Bass
I didn't even think about timing on painting, if you hadn't mentioned it I bet I would have waited. Good call!
Nexous
No problem! Just easier to do when it's still in pieces Other than that, it looks good. The extra cuts you plan on doing to the lens area looks solid too Personally I like mine not as jagged
stasz
Agree ears looks good. Your pencil line on the bottom of lens "eyes" looks a little too pointy to me. I think what you've got cut out looks good. Maybe a touch more off the top, but the shape overall is good. Nice job!
Bass
I'll probably just go with trimming the top of the lens area then and not worry about grinding out the bottom bits. Thanks for the input!
Nikko
Nice ear holes! I also like that you noticed that the SC lens hole is not quite accurate. I don't see a lot of people mentioning that and it is bothering me too (on mine). I am cutting my ear holes and revisiting the lens cut-out soon. Nice work. Good eye. Bass
Haha, yeah, I can only imagine the stencil on there is smaller on purpose to give room for error when cutting it out. It would certainly suck to have a blade slip and take a chunk out of an expensive helmet piece.
Oberkisstillalive
does the hole on the faceplate already come pre-cut? I would suggest coloring in marker where you think you should trim to sort of see what it might look like if you trimmed it
Nikko
The top needs to be shaved about an eighth of an inch, and the "valleys" need to be slightly deeper and sharper. Hard to illustrate with words. I will post some pics in the helmet comparison thread or something later on. I just completed my SC helmet mods, and I am very happy with the shape of the lens cut now. Nikko
I posted pics of my own lens area cut in the "Ultimate Helmet Comparison Thread" (post number 25) Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Nexous
I would just say use these as guidelines if you want absolute screen accuracy, don't look at helmet comparisons and just look straight at the film that's your best bet EDIT: Just from a personal observation, there are "variations", not every single helmet was cookie cutter and some differed (ear hole sizing between these two)
Bass
Alright, so shortly after I did those cuts I got knocked down with some disease I can only assume was the black plague, during the tail end of it I decided to make some more cuts... then I wound up going to mexico for a bit on vacation, and now i'm finally home. So the image above is what I wound up with after getting a bit more off. I honestly feel I should have gently curved the top more now that I'm looking at it next the screen capture. I think I'm going to revisit it tomorrow and give it a really hard looking at and see if I can maybe do some kind of damage control without compromising the face. Edit -- Alternatively I could take what Nexous said about 'variations' to heart and just not over-cut on my lens hole
