Flight suit option question.

G'day.

I was looking for local options for a flight suit and came up with an idea I'd like to get some feedback on.

The overalls I found are lightweight 100% cotton by Hard Yakka, which are basically the Aussie version of Dickies. Being lightweight and breathable would be a huge bonus in our climate. They seem to have just the two chest pockets that can be unstitched and probably have access pockets in the side that can be sewn. They also appear fairly fitted which I understand to be a criteria for Lancers.

The only large downside I see is that they dont come in black. However it may be possible to get a white one and dye it.

Any feedback on whether this could be a good option would be much appreciated. Cheers.

It's a good looking suit. If it's not expensive, it'd be worth trying to dye it black. Just add the riding patch, mudflap, straps and a strap across the collar.

Thanks for the feedback. Could give this a go.

Do you have to remove chest pockets if they are underneath cummerbund, vest and armor? If they are unseen does it matter?

My guess is yes. That way I can use the material for the strap across the collar.

Anything visible should be taken off, I believe those pockets are technically hidden by the Cummerbund / Flak Vest, but since they can't be accessed without removing things... might as well remove them and use them for the neck flap :)

If you dye a white garment to black the original white color stitching will show through unless you use a dye for polyester. There are plenty of black overalls on eBay.

After spending the last hour researching the dying process Ive come to the conclusion that dying polyester cant be done by mere mortals. Its generally done in factory settings at high temperatures with toxic chemicals.

I was looking for the cooler options and this idea may not be a good one, unfortunately.

That suit did look good Nomad... I don't like the weight of the Redkap as well - especially on 90 degree +days. The material CB made his suits out of was much lighter. I recently purchased a boba Fett flight suit ( all white) which is really light. Shame there aren't more black options available

I am doing a Supertrooper. The flightsuit I bought is a 2 piece one made in white. Have almost all my parts to start assembling it - helmet will be here Monday and armor won't be here till October but it is Bobamaker so I am ok with waiting. I want to take both my flight suits to a local tailor and see if they can make me another light weight scout one. May cut up my Redkap and try it myself but I don't know if I can sew the zipper in.

Sounds awesome. I scratch made my armour from 5ml acrylic. There is so much going on with that suit I had to attempt making as much as I could.

im thinking of tackling the lighter flightsuit myself as well. Actually checked out a local sewing machine store earlier today and been watching sewing vids. Still playing with options. I build seats for cars for a living so could be another avenue to explore. Feel free to pm if you want to exchange notes on that.
