SomeGuy01
Hey guys, been looking at costuming and thinking how fun it would be. Scouts have always been one of my favorite troops so I figured that would be my first choice. I've been reading around through other people's threads and soaking up the information I can find but I couldn't find everything I was wondering. I don't have any real hands on experience with assembling stuff like this, just your regular around the house kind of stuff. Also I don't have any specialised tools and see things like rivet guns, etc. that make it seem intimidating. I guess I'm mostly afraid of ruining a kit before it even gets close to completion. Another thing is I'm unsure if I would fit into some helmets or armor, I seem to be a big bigger than a lot of you guys. I'm about 5'9" and 200 lbs. Hats seem to fit snug on me so I think my head may be a little bigger. I suppose my main fear is either I'll jump into it just to find out I can't do it or it won't even work for me. So, what do you guys think? Is it pretty difficult for a newbie? Could I make a suit that fits and looks proper? Thanks.
Guest Forrest Patrol
Hello, welcome I only just realised something lately, that if you just have a little belief in yourself, you can do it. I'm sure everyone here knows what scene I'm talking about. We're all here to help, guide, answer questions, we will get you there. There's no rush. Luke rushed off without enough knowledge and ends up losing a hand (and his lightsaber!). A few of us here, including myself, have bought armour without research and got inaccurate, lower quality costumes. Its less difficult than it seems. SC is the recommended armour, supposedly comes with a DVD of instructions I think.
Retrofire
Welcome to BSN! Forrest Patrol couldn't be more right. Just take a step and try and I'll be you'll be surprised at what you can accomplish. This is a great place with lots of folks who are there to stand behind you to help and guide you to become a great trooper. Everyone here has just been great in answering questions, giving tips and warning of gotcha's every step of my build. Take your time and look around and get to know the place learn all you can and ask lots of questions. I'm just taking it a step at time myself so again, in agreement with Forrest, there is no rush. Best to you! -Peter
SomeGuy01
Thanks guys. Looked up SC armor, saw a bunch of instructions and stuff. I think the helmet assembly might be out of my skill set but the armor probably not. Also, my wife sews nicely so that should help. Any suggestions on order of assembly? I was thinking do soft bits first and then go for the armor.
Guest Forrest Patrol
For the helmet, it depends on how much $ you want to spend and head size. For assembly order, yes, most say soft parts first.
wookieevader
I would go armor first because the soft parts are sized to how the armor fits Sent from my LGLS990 using Tapatalk
SomeGuy01
Well I've been doing some more research and figuring stuff out. I'm going to have to do this guy piece meal and over some time, unfortunately, but I'll try to keep you guys posted of my status. Oh well for Ep 7. Guest Forrest Patrol
Get to know your local Garrison, some guys have multiple costumes, just look at Marcel or kathgruben, someone may be kind enough to let you troop in one of their spares (yes, we do this ). Not sure how you feel about trooping as Kat's Slave Leia though...
SomeGuy01
Hahaha. I wouldn't be the first or probably the last hairy Leia out there.
stasz
I was lucky enough to score a completed helmet from Darth Voorhees here - who has since defected to the TIE Pilots. I kid, Lou But I did the rest of my build myself with some sewing help from my mum. If you have the time and patience, the build itself is very rewarding. So much so that I want to get a new bucket in kit form just to tackle it. I'm looking forward to a second costume in large part for the build process. I loved working on my Scout. Just about every mistake you could make has been made. Research, research, research. I spent as much, if not more time reading than I did with an exact-o or needle and thread in my hand.
SomeGuy01
Going to start off with the jump suit and boots. I was wondering though, how do you guys lace up the boots? It doesn't look like it works with the vinyl there, unless you fold it down I guess.
Guest Forrest Patrol
You don't lace them, leave them just loose enough to slip on or just leave them off and let the front piece of vinyl hold it together.
01Hawk
I have flat laces in mine and just have them pulled tight. I could easily tie them since the upper rows are exposed but just tuck them in the boot instead
SomeGuy01
I got a box today! My wife told me not to open it and wait until Christmas but I couldn't wait.
SomeGuy01
Well got my RedKap for Christmas but it was one size too small.... The arms and legs were right but the torso was way too short. Oh well, a little bit more waiting.
01Hawk
Not sure which you ordered but I think they have a " long" verison for each size- I had the same problem when I got mine
kayelbe
They do. Glad to see I'm not the only one who got the wrong size. Apparently everyone is a long wit RedKap. I wear coveralls for work and never wore a long with any brand before.
SomeGuy01
I always thought long sizes were for longer arms and legs, not a longer torso. I suppose I'll try the long, thanks guys.
Oblivian
Got mine from Amazon/redkap direct. And as I'm 6.3 got the long. Thankfully the long does mean leg and arm. Theyre proportioanl remeber bit usually means length. And an extra at the waist for luck. Fit just right. If anything almost too short in the body. But not being crotched so far! Just a squeeze to get in. The colar is a bit odd. Gap in the middle and a dome flap that probably won't close or meet up if you are like me. But the flap you add can help hide this Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
SomeGuy01
Ahhh I don't know if I should go with SC armor or pre order the WTF armor... Decisions are hard.
Retrofire
Picking your armor is always hard. After a lot of research I'm going with SC as it's nice armor and they have excellent customer service. I just now finished all my soft armor and boots so I am finally ready for my hard armor. I've heard good things about Walt on the FISD boards most importantly that he has really good communications.
Ghost11c
Ahhh I don't know if I should go with SC armor or pre order the WTF armor... Decisions are hard. i researched for a year, then got the money, even borrowed a friends armor and trooped with them. finally ordered my SC, was shipped the NEXT day and is very nice. SomeGuy01
I'm sure I'll be extremely happy with which ever I choose. I was just thinking it would be cool to be a tad different than most other scouts with the new kit on the block
SomeGuy01
Just went and got my duck canvas, vinyl, plain black shirt, and some elastic. They didn't have much for velcro.... Then I got home and ordered the suede, boots, and armor. Going to be an exciting spring!
SomeGuy01
I just received my Wampa Wear gloves and I am so surprised! I got the XL according to the sizing chart and they fit absolutely perfectly. Not to mention are very comfortable. Does anyone know what the little zipper pocket on the end of the gauntlet is for? Just a hidey hole or what?
