Guest DoctorSpaceman Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Hi all. I'm working on my first build, and I'm trying to put together the helmet. Most of the actual assembly is done, and now I'm working on the details. I attempted painting the nose section of the faceplate, but my taping was substandard and it didn't turn out very well. After looking around for suggestions on how to do it properly, I decided that my best course of action was starting over with the paint entirely. Does anyone know a good way to remove spray enamel from ABS plastic? Neither paint thinner or bleach worked very well, and I'm afraid to use acetone because I read that it melts the plastic. Any suggestions?
Griffin-X Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 "Goo Gone" works really well on paint without adverse affects. It's all natural with no solvents. http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-18803/Cleaning-Supplies/Goo-Gone-12-oz-Spray-Gel?pricode=WY546&gadtype=pla&id=S-18803&gclid=CMC75aiElccCFQkFaQodYEEAxA&gclsrc=aw.ds "Citri Strip" is another natural product that works very well. I used this on an entire Tie helmet that "crinkled". You just spray it on, wait about 10 minutes, and the paint will literally wipe off. It's good stuff... http://hardwareonlinestore.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=productdetails&virtuemart_product_id=1769&virtuemart_category_id=14101&gclid=CIuczc2ElccCFQkFaQodYEEAxA 2
Ammonites Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Have you tried Goo Gone? Haven't tried it on my armor, but it has had good success elsewhere. Goof Off will melt the plastic.
Guest DoctorSpaceman Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I have not tried Goo Gone, but I will. Thanks guys! I'm new to costuming and propmaking and so the whole thing is slightly overwhelming. It's a lot of fun though, and I'm looking forward to finishing it!
Darth Voorhees Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 yea goo gone should work. Ive used mineral spirits as well but mostly just for over spray not solid painted areas. You are correct avoid acetone, and Ammonites is also correct do NOT use goof off!
Chex Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 California Scents, Orange scent! lol..it's a car freshener, but the orange it works wonders on paint, and leaves a nice smell afterwards hehe. 1
Quinxx44 Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 Could be like me and go 0-100 real quick... I messed up my paint, then when I tried to correct it by respraying white, the plastic had an adverse reaction and caused it to yellow to a vanilla-ish color... Then I tried sanding if off and made it worse... Said screw it and took it to a buddy who paints cars professionally. I said "fix this." Now it looks great!! But a pro car paint job will do that... 1
