1st Helmet Purchasefor 501 approval/trooping

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for my first helmet. I'd like to get the best I can afford up front. I've got a large head (7 1/2 ball cap size and about 23cm circumference). I would like to get a product that doesn't require extensive work to meet 501 standards. I've been researching through this forum for several months and had pretty much narrowed my search down between the LW and the KS based on my understanding of their quality and size. However, I have recently seen postings about the Altmann and the RS which I found intriguing. I thought the Altmann was pretty much impossible to come by anymore but I have seen recent postings where folks are still able to secure these helmets. My impression of the RS is that, although it is high-quality, is more of a collectors piece than used for trooping. Hoping to get some guidance from those with experience in this matter. Thanks!

good luck in your search! I ordered an RS for my first helmet, I do not have it yet so I cannot tell you if it's good for trooping but a lot of folks here are doing the same thing from what I understand. My main concern is that it is made from a thin gauge of plastic so it is more fragile than the others...

KS is a good trooping helmet, and has plenty of space. Just need to change out the snout and bolt covers on that one. I troop with a KS, but am building a LW (Whenever I get around to finishing it.)

Word is still out on the RS, tho I suspect it will be troopable. I would consider the Altman's more collectible at this time then the RS, but people do troop in them.

Okay. So, if the LW is hard to come by and the Altmann is available only to those who are already scouts, I'd be interested in your recommendations for my first lid? The RS,KS,or something else

I've begun to narrow the field down to three: Altmann, RS, or EFX. Any thoughts?

EFX presold their product and have been showing their prototype at conventions and such for over 2 years now, but to my knowledge has yet to be shipped and keeps getting delayed.

I've got a large head which certainly reduces what is suitable.

I have a LW bucket and whilst it is a superb helmet, it really is too small for me to wear for any length of time- I believe it to be pretty screen accurate in terms of size.

With the Efx and RS being screen accurate sizing, I would think large heads will also struggle to wear it comfortably.

I also had an Altmann, and whilst this is no where near as nice as the LW, it is bigger, so it was easy to get on and could be worn for long periods.

My view, large heads = Altmann.

Does anything need to be done to the Altmann for 501st approval or Lancer status?

Been a while since I've handled one in person, but as long as the decals are all correct and hing bolt covers match the color os grey on the snout, and there's no molded stamp on the back bottom of the lid, it would be good.

Haven't looked at the MLC. I heard the fiberglass wasn't a good idea for large heads because it won't flex to allow your head to fit into the opening. Is that a legitimate reason to discount the MLC? I haven't heard of NI at all. What's it made of? Where can I find out more about it?

both are Fiberglass helmets, the NI looks better in the pics and in the one review that was done by a BSN member, my MLC helmet is pretty big, not sure you'd need it to flex, I can wear mine with my glasses and still have room...
