netslave
How do you stay cool (or at least not as hot as standing on the surface of the sun)? I would have that that wearing mostly cloth would be much cooler than a full ABS TK suit, but it seems I was wrong. What do you do to stay cool? I have thought about cutting out sections of the flightsuit (that are hidden by armor, the vest, or cummerbund) and replacing it with mesh or leaving the hole. I've also started playing around with the idea of pumping air into the suit via a fan and some well placed tubes. But those are far from operational. Fans in the helmet are a no-brainer, I just haven't installed them yet. How about a moisture wicking undersuit, like the TK undersuit? Would that help or just add more to the mix? So... .Ideas? Chef
You don't... It's either hot or damned hot. Don't wear any underpants and thin socks. That's about it. Face the wind...
Chuckmn8
I was thinking of the same thing as arizona heat can get pretty bad during the summer. When I was in afghanistan we used some thing similar to this inside our vests. http://steelevest.com/product/gel-ice-15-oz-thermo-strips-set-of-5-sa1145-5/ Dont think it would be to hard to make a thin vest or sew some pockets inside the coveralls to allow for some well placed packs like these
Chex
lol I just marched in the Star Wars Weekends parade and it's HOT!! I'm used to it, but when I first started I would just shove an ice pack down into my chest armor and it would keep me cool. Now, I use nothing..I just sweat. The key is hydration!
Dart
I've cut some holes in my jumpsuit and vest and had some moisture-wicking sport cloth sewn in. Gives me a bit more breathing room. I also have a helmet fan behind my hollow snout. Other than that, I just deal. Take a break if it gets too hot and make sure that I'm hydrating all day before and after I troop.
Chef
You'll be fine... They are hot, no matter what you do really. But you do get used to it quite quickly. Plenty of water, plenty of breaks. Listen to your body it WILL tell you when you're due for a time out. Know the signs. When you think "sh!t man... I'm boiling!" That's a good indicator that you need to go in, grab a litre of water and take a breather! If you want something that is truly unbearable to wear.... Get yourself inside an Alien! yodaid764
One suggestion I have is: Here at Fort Polk, LA there is a guy that is a nationally certified Santa. He showed me a cooling vest he wears under his santa suit since his outfit is made of a heavy material. I think one of these cooling vests might be the way to go. There are a variety of them on Amazon. As I have not completed my costume yet, I cannot attest if these would fit/work for us.
