Helmet detail in the back

Recommended Posts

Quick question about the helmet's "indents" in the back (I don't know how to call them).

If you look at the helmet from behind, on the left side you can see a decal containing 17 vertical stripes, and on the right side there are a series of "valleys" or "depressions".

The question is: How many of these valleys are there?

In most replicas I can count 9. However on the original helmet, it looks like there are only 8, or maybe it's the weathering that doesn't let me count right...

Here it looks like there are 8 but the first one looks wider than the others:

This one *looks* like there are 8 and they are all equal...

Although I'm not sure if there is one more at the beginning, way thinner than the others...

Lone Wolf's helmet. Clearly 9:

Don Post's. 7?

And a weird decal on the left.

EFX. 8?

There were possibly 9 on the original buck, but the ninth was probably so close to the centreline that on the original buckets it may have been filled in or trimmed out, or a weak pull may have not shown the detail.

Not having seen a picture of the original buck from the back, it's impossible to say for sure exactly how many there were, and this is speculation on my part.

On the EFX one you can see the ghost of a 9th

What we can say is there are definitely 8 "clear" indents, with traces of a possible 9th

You are probably right. Since the first one is so close to the line where the two halves of the helmet meet, it probably got covered or trimmed.

Thanks for input!

BTW, the first picture is supposed to be a screen-used helmet.
