Has anyone made a flight suit from scratch?

I wanted to take a break from the helmet and started to look at the flight suit. So I went to a camping/military store and found a couple of flight suits...

The only one that fitted me was military green but I though I could dye it.

But then I asked for the price and it was AR$ 1500 (which is about US$ 150).

So I'm still googling other stores. I can probably find a worker coverall for about a fifth of that.

But I'm also thinking... How hard can it be to make it myself?

Has anyone done it? Do you have patterns?

Googling for patterns now...

The Redkap Overalls are what 90% of everyone uses as a base. (75% of all statistics are made up on the fly ;) )

The templates for the suede patches, and necessary mods are in the soft armor section

So I've read. Unfortunately, delivery to my corner of the galaxy is going to cost me way more than the flight suit itself.

For the past 5 years or so, local customs has made everything possible to stop people from buying outside the country.

Wow, that really stinks. Do you guys have something like craigslist? Browse listing for your country on eBay? Any black jumpsuit or flight suit will work for a base really, you'll just have to mod

I had mine made from scratch. A little Filipino lady (who looked an awful lot like Yoda... seriously) copied another set of coveralls I had.

Best advice: find a cheap pair of coveralls that fit. If you, or someone you know are decent at sewing, they should be able to figure out a pattern from it all. Worst comes to worse, you can rip the cheap coveralls apart and, *voila*, you have a pattern.

BTW, most military flight suits are made of Nomex, a fire-retarding material. It doesn't dye well at all because it's made from mostly synthetic materials like Rayon. If you must dye fabric, 100% Cotton or 50/50 Poly/Cotton blend are your friends.

Thanks for all the advice!

I've found a store selling worker overalls for about US$ 25.

Now I just have to make the time to go there, since their working hours kinda match with mine. We'll see.

I'll try to avoid making it from scratch myself, but I already have some patterns ready just in case.

As for craigslist and similar sites. I haven't found many jumpsuits and flightsuits and I really don't like buying it online, since I want it to have the right fit if I'm going to pay for it.

I wanted to find someone local to make one for me as well. I like the fabric used on the one I had made but it just doesn't fit correctly. The RedKap I bought was/is much heavier as well as doesn't fit well as I should have bought a " long". I did see this pattern in a store as available .. Here is an amazon link but I did see it in person.

I know there have been issues with him, largely related to postage, but I believe Cucblack has made flightsuits from scratch. And he's in Bolivia, so maybe easier to post to another South American country. However, treat his services with caution and get advice from others before using him.
