Riding Patch - The bane of my existence! >.<

Trying to graft suede onto an already-assembled garment is proving more than I'm capable of. Before I tear my coveralls apart so I can get everything to lay flat and not crumple under the suede, is there anyone that is actually good at this that I can either a) send this to or b ) walk me through it? I've delved into all the tutorials I can find on here and nothing is working... (I'm basically trying to come up with a pattern/method using scrap fabric before I cut into and poke holes in my suede.)

It is tricky.... Certainly not one of my favourite jobs.

 

1: Make your pattern from the suit. Lay the suit flat and make the patch from the shape of the undersuit. Leave a 10mm overlap on the inner thighs and up the front and rear seams. You should end up with 4 parts. Front/left front/right rear/left rear/right.

2: Sew these four parts together.

3: Pin this patch to your suit, all the way around the outside and up the thigh seams. The thigh seams are important because it stops the patch moving about and the undersuit bunching. The more you pin it, the less likely it is to move.

4: Sew (now I know it's a simple word... but the task is a dog. Use a walking foot, zigzag stitch and the correct leather needle).

Find a pattern or shape you like. I make mine out of one piece. Fold in half & mark this line with a ball point pen. Lay the jumpsuti flat & open the legs wide. Now line this pen line up with the center seam of the jumpsuit & pin in place. Once done have someone hold tge jumpsuit up & see if both leg parts of the riding patch are even. Is yes start sewing in place, if not readjust until right.

Thanks guys, I was trying to do it as four pieces before, instead of trying to sew them together first. Hopefully doing this will help.

 

Out of curiosity, any tips on dealing with the fly on the pants? I don't want to sew the patch on such that it restricts how far the fly opens.

Yeah, just don't take the front as high as the fly.

 

It's covered over by the cod section of the cummerbund anyway.

I sewed mine as two pieces, one per leg. The bund elastic covers the gap. I found trying to do it as one piece was impossible, but two pieces was fairly easy. I got a pattern somewhere on BSN I think.

This is one of the things I am struggling with too. Not being a strong with sewing or a machine makes it even worse

I did mine off the pattern that's here somewhere. Sew the top part first (the curve in silver fox pic above), then fit it, fasten it with pins, try it on, remove the pin that punctured your testicle, try it again, then sew it on by hand.

Just a heads up; if you use my pattern, the front of the patch is going to look like it does in the book, meaning it's going to stick out a little further up front. It makes more sense given that they lean forward on the bikes in the movie, so that's where the wear on a suit would occur

It's not that hard. Gf did it with little problem. We did it in halves (but didn't cut). Took bout lol over 2hour

I initially tried going at it with a sewing machine, but after several miserable fails (and pricking myself with the pins) I turned to hand-sewing. It may be tedious, but I found it much easier and gives better control.
