trouble painting

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

I'm having trouble painting my blaster specifically the scope. I've used 3 different spray paints. I've sanded. I've scrubbed with warm water and soap and reapplied new paint. The problem is around the grooves and knobs the paint doesn't dry and gets sticky. Any advice?

Like Griffin said always Primer first this way it gives the paint something to hold onto. Use very light coats and don't rush it. Believe me it will always work out better for you!

Is it cracking and falling off? I ask this because you may have some small resin dust in the grooves and seams. It could also be an oil left over from the pull that got into those areas. I ran into this problem. I found cleaning with rubbing alcohol (make sure it gets in there us a cotton swab if needed), and priming first. Then wet sanding (dipping the sandpaper in water before using) with a fine sandpaper. Letting it dry and then painting solved my problems. I also use rubber gloves to keep oils from the fingers off.

When you used three different spray paints, were they all the same brand? Intermixing brands can cause chemical reactions and lack of adhearing.(The sticky reaction.) If you have mixed a bunch together, it might be best to strip it and start again.

Like I said I have delt with this while painting a Tie helm for someone. Also, how old was the paint(s) you used? I find once you use a spray can, storing them on the shelf it doesn't take long before the paint becomes sub par.

Most likely, there is still some resin "residue" present. Or like Steve mentions, dust from the resin casting process. WITH any resin cast part, wash the heck out of it with soap and water BEFORE painting. This is a really important step. The resin "residue" will prevent the paint from sticking or even curing, and could cause further problems like the dreaded "orange peel" effect.

Ok well I have taken everyone's advice. Stripped the old paint..sanded..washed..repeated. I primed it with a dark grey spray primer and that looked promising. When I applied my black paint I'm getting the same result

You are probably too close. I had little pinholes in my paint on the entire blaster from being too close and putting it on kinda heavy. Peeled off the old paint, sanded it and cleaned everything up and started all over with painting but this time I am a lot farther away from the blaster and doing several light coats and it seems to be working. I put on one light coats and let it sit almost all day so it's not tacky before I put another light coats on it. In total I have put 4 coats on it in two days.
