Updated my current cummerbund but am wanting to make a new one (will post pics later). Basically the material I have currently is a bit thick, but in reference images it seems to be a lot softer with padding inside. Is there a specific material or should I just go with whatever works for me?

It's still a little up for debate to be fair.

The standard material that is used is cotton twill/drill.

Although looking closely at some of the pictures, I am of the opinion that it has a certain sheen to it. What it is exactly I can't say. A sort of rayon/nylon type material.

It's certainly a different material to that used for the pouches. Which does appear to be a cotton based material.

As long as the 'look' is right. I say go with what ever works for you.

A lot of us use duck cloth, but I agree with Chef -- sometimes the bund has a sheen to it.

I remember reading that the cummerbund was originally made from a special cotton from the period that had a sheen. "Polished cotton" or something like that.

Dat's what the "Costumes" book says. Polished Cotton is basically some cotton with a glaze (or something) that gives it a sheen. It was very popular in the '80's but not so much nowadays. That said, I think I've got a line on some vintage PC and I'll see what it looks like.

I know that some have reported that it's cotton canvas (Gino) and that would lead me to believe that it's a heavier weave cotton. I've also done mine using a heavy dull satin, but I put the duller side facing out. Seems to look close, but it doesn't have that woven texture that the original stuff had.

I make mine from a nylon based material for the sheen.

Here's my latest...

But, yes, different material to the pouches. ;)
