theisaac
Hope this is the right place to start a helmet WIP. If it's not, please move it where it needs to go. I just got my helmet kit from KS. Here are the pictures from the unboxing: IMG]http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg562/isaacaz/C6248109-99AC-4EA9-99EB-D7B5F487672E_zpspiiympla.jpg[/img] Does that pencil mark look about right for the lens trimming on the faceplate? NegativeEleven
Yep, his molds haven't gotten any better since I got mine 2 years ago. I'll try to find the tutorial I used for you.
theisaac
thanks man, appreciate it
Durkness
They actually send out the address to the one that is posted in the "armory archives" for a tutorial. http://forum.bikerscout.net/index.php?showtopic=77&view=findpost&p=216 I put mine together a couple weeks ago and I am still crying over how it went together. If they sent you the same sheet, the first picture on the top right with how the face plate goes in will help a lot. I trimmed my stuff going off of original helmet photos and this sculpt is nothing like it.....so I had a rough time with assembly. But it is together......
theisaac
I went and used the pictures of the screen helmets and shaped my faceplate "opening". If its bigger than the lens KS sends, I'll be OK. I have welding mask material I can get for 15 dollars and trim it to fit. Here are the updated faceplate with pencil marks for the new cuts I'm considering making on the visor area.
NegativeEleven
I used a fighter pilot helmet lens because that thick block KS sends doesn't look like it would be easy to heat shape without distorting vision. And it's so thick, I think it would have kept me from wearing glasses. The lens I used was $2 at the army surplus store.
NegativeEleven
I say don't cut off of the dome. You will want that extra area to clamp when you glue and it's hidden by the visor anyway.
theisaac
Hey Chris, When you say dome.. do you mean the top dome part?
NegativeEleven
Oh yeah, sorry meant the back/sides where you marked to cut.
Chex
Yeah I saw that too and was like..don't cut there!!
theisaac
Danger.. Danger!!! DO NOT CUT THE DOME lol. We're good. No plastic was harmed yet.
theisaac
the visor is next on the chopping block, do those marks look right?
theisaac
I wont lie. This KS helmet is wonky and that's saying a lot coming from the TK world. The sides of the visor are literally different sizes. That made getting the faceplate completely square and centered. I did go get some carriage bolts from the hardware store and I'm waiting for the better snout from Lou. The lens KS sends is way too thick to use so I'm going to stop at a local welding supply shop here in town and get some replacement shield material for the lens. theisaac
I also picked up this busted up helmet that needs lots of work. It's an obvious recast of something because it has the softest lines I've seen. On the plus side, its bigger than the KS. Any ideas what this thing was? NegativeEleven
I can send you a lens. It's not as dark but much thinner.
theisaac
Chris, if my local shop is out of the replacement shields, I'll definitely buy it off ya.
Griffin-X
Your lid is coming along nicely. And, Chris has a great lens deal there.
NegativeEleven
There's always a few at the army surplus store here for $1-$3 each. I have to go in there this week because they're gonna call me when they get new black molle canteens for my Cobra costume.
theisaac
Got my DHV snout in the mail today. Pics on the helmet incoming.
theisaac
KS helmet is basically done.
spookymufu
I'm no expert, but, it looks like you still have a lot of trimming to do, looks like the visor still needs trimming all around
NegativeEleven
Not bad, but yeah, looks like some extra sanding is needed on at least the bottom edge of visor.
Darth Voorhees
whoa didnt know you had so much ink Issac...sweet! Id take a bit off the top of the snout, it shouldnt go up that high. The KS has a short snout area. I heated the thick lens with a heatgun with zero issues. I actually love the thick lens because it is crystal clear. If you dont want it, i'll take it off your hands Your right though this helmet is a pain to get together correctly I think it took me 2 sittings to get the visor onto the fceplate and it look straight on my shadow scout build. (technically it was a regular scout build i was doing for worm, so i havent done anything to it yet for the shadow scout)
theisaac
Thanks for the feedback fellas. I'll sand some more off tomorrow and post up new pictures. @Lou - ya man. I was a tattooer for 10 years. You quickly run out of space when you are in a shop 7 days a week.
