Getting a new helmet and wanted to get a voice box for it. Any suggestions on preferred ones? This caught my eye but would opinions before I purchase.

I just use an Aker MR 1506 amp and its perfectly fine, and everyone says i sound just like the real scouts. Its just an amplifier, but it does give you that type of sound. They sell for around $37 with free shipping direct from China. Ive bought a few through e-bay with zero problems. If you just search "Aker voice amplifier", they will come up.

I know that this topic is rather old, and woe to me if I an committing necromancy here, but I have a question on the use of these.

I figured I'd reuse this topic since there is already a lot of good info here.

How do y'all hook your voice amps up so that they are still functional, and don't have wonky acoustics?

Where is your box located on your person?

Not sure what you mean by wonky acoustics. I have an Aker 1506, an ICOMM (static burst generator), and have used both the boom mike and a throat mike with no unwanted distortion.

For scouts, I see a lot of people wear theirs in one of the pouches, with the cord either just hidden (not very well) or routed through a hole in the cummerbund.

Thank you very much for the answer. That makes a lot of sense.

By wonky acoustics I mean sounding muffled from being located behind something and/or Your voice coming from an odd direction from being located in an odd place on your body.

The pouches don't really muffle it. People never notice your voice isn't coming from your head - when I've had to repeat things I notice the listener will still lean closer to my face rather than my chest. I think it's an instinctive subconscious thing.

I tried a throat mic but found it activated the static burst on the icomm too easily. Went back to the boom mic.

I purchased my icomm and Aker amp from a 501st member at voicebooster.com

So, the iComm isn't truly necessary for the Aker to work right? You could just plug a mic into the Aker and it'd be functional, correct?

I know the iComm will make you sound more authentic, but my funds are not the biggest and I'll be buying things piecemeal.

Absolutely not required. I only mentioned it because my only active kit is a TD, and that's what I use. And it really doesn't sound like it's coming from anywhere but YOU. I've had the same experience with people assuming it's coming from my helmet.
