boogie Posted December 30, 2014 Share Posted December 30, 2014 Hi all, I've had my SC armour and helmet delivered this morning and after reading the instructions decided to make a start on the helmet. I've kept exactly to the instructions and got part way through - with some help from my missus with the painting - and decided to take a step back at this point before I get too far. The ears are decals. I'm unsure about whether to leave these or cut them out, what's the normal protocol? I've still got to drill the hole for the greeblie and fix it in place when the paint's dried, and add the nose detail. Do the eyes look good enough or should I cut and/or sand some more? Finally some interior shots showing the detail for fixing the glass, I'm still a bit unsure about this detail and toying with the idea of shaping the glass and glueing. Suggestions? jcarlson101 Posted December 31, 2014 Share Posted December 31, 2014 Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe your ear hole templates/decals need to be switched to match the shape of the ears better. Personally I cut the ears out for better air flow and paint the area behind the ear holes black to complete the look. For the lens I like the idea of a removable lens in case it gets scratched or if I wanted a mirrored look for some reason. But, I also shaped it to fit better. I used them as templates as well and Dremeled them out . I drilled a ton of little holes and popped the piece out and then ground it out and sanded it. Chex Posted January 1, 2015 Share Posted January 1, 2015 Def cut out the ears, and I would trim and smooth out the lens area better. Your snout seems a little too glossy. Jane Posted January 2, 2015 Share Posted January 2, 2015 Boogie's Missus here (currently building myself a Stormtrooper but I'm the one that gets the art jobs on the builds). Paint is satin black, same as the ESB vocoder. I think he's taken the photo when the paint is still very very wet and under a light so it looks more gloss than satin... Wasn't happy with the snout so about to repaint, I've remodelled his eyes a bit to get a more level finish and painted the inside of the helmet black (this is what happens when he leaves me to go to the football, I have to fiddle). I've cut the ear holes and carried on putting the final pieces of the helmet together, you were all right and I had to re-painted the gloss black in satin (well I didn't paint it cos I'd have ended up with the wobbliest of lines ever) and fixed the greeblie. Painted the inside in black and added the helmet pads. I need to smooth the ears a bit more as the photos show how rough they are. They don't look quite as bad in real life. I've got my flight suit under way but struggling to find somewhere that stocks real suede. A big thank you to Jeff at Studio Creations who offered to send me a chin cup foc if I was in the US. Unfortunately I aren't so he's only charging the cost of postage. I also made a start on the belt and thermal detonator but put it to one side for now until I can concentrate on it a bit more. Any suggestions for fixing the ends on the corrugated tube cos my glue doesn't seem to like sticking to the tube itself? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But when making them, you need to make sure you bring the vinyl down as much as possible to the sole, to try and cover over those faux stitches on the top face of the sole. I was considering getting the dremel on the stitch detail but might just wait until I see something a bit better. Thanks for the input. Anyway here goes Another question if you don't mind, the suede jacket I bought as a donor for the patches has panels that are only about 13" wide. To use this I'd need to have a join in the butt panel running vertically on the centre point - but covered by the velcro strap of the cummerband. Will this be acceptable? Chef Posted January 30, 2015 Share Posted January 30, 2015 Looks OK. If you've got the option, I'd make it a bit wider, but length downwards is fine. Attach it under the cummerbund. - Release the elastic the most possible for avoid the camel toe. - If you want the cummerbund more movie accurate, make it shorter. Must placed over the belt.
