Sewing Machine to use

Before I started doing all my stuff I was worried about which sewing machine would work on the vinyl and Velcro. I had never sewed anything in my life. Having asked here I got a bunch of different responses on what would work and what wouldn't.

I was going to buy a fancy one and just get it over with. Instead a friend came over with hers just to see how it would go and to teach me how to actually use a sewing machine. The machine is a Singer Esteem II. It shows on Targets site as about $110. I easily sewed the Velcro, straps and vinyl. My lines aren't 100% perfect but I think they will be fine. I jumped right into it - in hindsight I would like to have just practiced on some scraps first.

The one thing the machine didn't like was sticky back Velcro. It gummed up the needle. After trips to Walmart, Michaels, AC Moore and Joann fabrics I was able to find all sew in Velcros. Some came with the SC kit.

Eeeek... what you sewing with it... Buffalo Hide??

My singer 427 was my mothers. She was a professional seamstress and this was her home machine.

It was made in 1967 and is still going strong, even with my abuse.

I think if you go with Singer, Brother, Pfaff or similar, you should be fine. Avoid cheap Chinese tat. I've seen plenty of those break.

I have a cheap Walmart machine. Been sewing hard core for few years now. Works fine, nothing fancy. I use 16 guage needles on everything. These are HD sewing needles made for canvas. You need to sew "sew on" velcro only. The sticky back will gum up any machines needle & cause it to break. Most fabric stores sell it by the foot or yard.
