Bobaben
Greetings to all! I'm a brand new member, and I want to start my build! I'm shopping around for a lid, and I came across a tirade on YouTube from a 501st member about the foolishness of spending $700 on an eFX helmet. I'm inclined to agree with his opinion on the matter. He repeatedly points out that for that money you can buy armor AND a quality lid like his (which DOES look very nice), but he doesn't wish to reveal where his came from. Has anyone seen this video that can identify it? I don't want to shell out $700 for a helmet, but I'm 6'2, and I do have a large head...plus its an f'ing beautiful helmet. My research indicates most of the fan-made helmets out there run small. Any suggestions? Glad to be a member, and excited to join the 501st! BikerScout007
If you have a big head, go with KS. You can get an assembled lid from them that is made in ABS and costs half as much as the eFX lid.
Bobaben
KS eh? I've been a tourist on the site for awhile, and I've read some horror stories. Is that what your lid is?
BikerScout007
Oh yeah, one of those horror stories was probably mine! It took them about 3 months to get it to me. Which isn't such an unusual time frame, actually. But when they tell you 8 weeks, then you get a little cranky. As for the lid itself -- they redid their molds so I havent had some of the quality issues that troopers in the past have had. But like I said, if you got a big head, it's kind of your only choice
bikerscout73
I have a KS bucket. ...I like it and I too have a big head....just change out the nose gribblie and the side bolts
Bobaben
Well it might be the right place to start. What about the mythical LoneWolf? I read someone arguing that his is almost identical to the eFX. Does he not make them anymore?
Dart
The LW bucket is a bit of a "Great White Buffalo". I think he kinda burnt himself out a bit when he initially did them. You can always try contacting him and see what he says.
CRISTONAMO
You could always go with CB another larger helmet.

Stroker
It's a CB bucket in the video from Bolivia.
TB-7076
Sorry but to compare a KS to an efx is foolish... If any of the fan made helmets reach the efx it would be the LW.
gino
No fan made helmet comes close to the accuracy of the EFX lid. Period. We bring these helmets to the cons and not once has someone brought any of the fan made helmets that they thought were close so we could compare them. I think once you see them side by side it will be an eye opening experience. Now if you want a cheaper alternative for trooping, there certainly are fan made helmets out there. I wasn't comparing them. Dude said he had 1) A big head 2) Not $700. That equals KS. I'm sure the eFX helmet is the best thing since sliced bread, but since it's too expensive and not practical for trooping, it's not really in the running for someone who is just trying to get their foot in the door.
TB-7076
Well the way it was presented here oz indirectly compared the two....at least my book. Of course the efx is not an average trooping bucket and yes it is quite an amount of cash. However, I think it is foolish to deem people foolish that decide to add it to their collection pr for the sake of screen accuracy (in shape not material) to even wear it. I spent some amounts of cash to have original items because I see a value in that. If that person thinks it is enough to go only a third of the route it is his and other people's mind set which I respect but no reason to indirectly stamp others as idiots who are of a different mind set. I mean this is nothing scientific where we can have arguments and evidence aboit an issue. This a matter of personal interest and preference. I think that guy is just jealous... And sure I would have loved to have such an opportunity for a more affordable price too bit in the end even fan made products will benefit from the new input we will get first hand through this piece. ...and then this guy might get a better helmet somewhen in time because someone else spent the bucks to compare and advise creative people within the community!
Bobaben
Great conversation! To be clear, the individual in the video never used the word "foolish." That is simply a PG word I chose to sum up his over-all message. When I stated that I agree, I simply meant that in my particular situation it's hard to justify paying $700 for a helmet. The work is exquisite, and there is certainly an argument for it being worth the price. Stroker: Thanks for the info! Gino: Appreciate your input--keep up the good work! Donovan
I'd say LW helmet does come pretty damn close but they are very rare so its hard to get a comparison. I would love a side by side comparison of the two but it will be awhile
gino
Hey Donovan, I would have to disagree that they are close. But hey we will be at NYCC in October so hopefully some scouts will bring some of their fan-made buckets to compare and then share here. It's been almost 2 years since we first started bringing this helmet to the cons and I'm still waiting for someone to actually do some comparing in person.

The guy in the video, and a lot of other folks, seem to be missing the point. The eFX helmet is not meant for costuming. It's a collectible. I mean sure, if you've got piles of cash to burn and you don't mind trooping around for hours in a $700 helmet, then have at it. But ultimately, it's meant to be put on a shelf and admired. You are talking about making a build with which to join the 501st Legion, get your troop on, and make a lot of kids smile. I can tell you from experience that not one child has pointed out to me that the dimensions of my fan-made helmet are not 100% accurate. They are too busy asking me 1) where did I park my speeder bike and 2) Have I spoken to Darth Vader today? So ultimately, comparisons between the two don't really matter because the fan made helmets and the eFX helmet do not serve the same purpose. For $700 you can get yourself a helmet AND a set of armor, and be well on your way to completing your build. A scout trooper is a pretty pricey build to begin with, so if budget is an issue (and head size), I think the KS is a perfectly good bucket to troop in.

Chex
1st warning. Keep this thread on topic, or it will be locked. We have a new member here asking a question. If you can't answer his question about a helmet, then please move on or take it to PMs. This is no place to have an argument or discussion that's been played out in another topic already.

Darth Voorhees
cool..since your question has been answered lol.. i just wanna say, Gino...i will be at NYCC and C7 with my scout, and i have an LW, would love to compare just to see for my own curiosity. Of the Fan made helmets the LW is definaltey the closest to screen used, so would technically be the closest to the efx. If may still be far off from the efx, but its def the first in line after it. Thats all i wanted to say

Darth Voorhees
haha there will be pictures! For the record the comparison will not be to negate either helmet, but to see the similarities/differences in the 2 most accurate helmets IMO.
