Bobik96 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I just sprayed my first coat of paint onto my fiberglass helmet, when I noticed a small spiderweb like crack. After I sand this down, if I need to build it back up can I use automotive "Bondo" on fiberglass?
Skinner3D Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I know a guy that sent his royal guard helmet to the car body shop to get it filled and sanded and painted. I suspect you can do the same trick.
Darth Voorhees Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Yes you can..i use bondo with/and fiberglass all the time. They are actually the same polyester resin base

Have you used bondo in this application before?
cucblack Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Don't confuse with fiberglass pieces. Fiberglass is the material used on the inner side. Exterior is resin or Gelcoat. You can apply any class of mass, bondo and paints over there. If you want erase this mark, only need apply a extra fine mass. "Fast Mass" translated from spanish. Now if it need repair. Open the lines with a dremmel disc, apply bondo. Better if you remove the paint before apply the bondo. 1
Bobik96 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 I started sanding and found that there was mass on top that did not hide the cracks. I sanded through the mass all the way to the base resin and scratches are still visible. They are in the resin. I plan to widen the cracks with a dremil. My concern was, can bondo be applied in such a thin coat? Or do I need a glazing putty.

Bobik96 Posted June 20, 2014 Author Posted June 20, 2014 Not bad for my first go around with fiberglass. I sanded down to the gelcoat and noticed that three of the little cracks had disappeared. I used a Dremel to open up the remaining cracks. I filled with Bondo, sanded and topped with glazing putty sanded primer wet sand primer wet sand primer.
Bobik96 Posted June 20, 2014 Author Posted June 20, 2014 Thank you for the advice everyone. Someone dropped something on my boat over memorial day weekend and left one of these marks. Now I know how to fix it.
