stuf123 Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Hello all, I finally found a few hours to start on my build. I have all the hard armor (SC) and the soft armor and boots are on the way. Decided to start with the thermal detonator. On to the belt next. 2
Jasmine33 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Hello there, Good luck on your build, I also got SC armor if you have any questions along the way just ask. Also post pictures of your progress.
stuf123 Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 Thanks Jasmine. I might take you up on that offer. Tonight I got all the armor corners rounded and sanded. I got the belt and bicep glued and set. Tomorrow I will start on getting the rivets into the belt and straps cut and placed. 2
EnigmaEngine Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Nice. And yeah, check build threads, ask questions....that's why we're here! 1
Jasmine33 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 You are doing it great, just make sure to only put one rivet on the back to connect the nylon strap. 2
stuf123 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Thanks for the photos Jasmine. They helped a lot. Didn't get a whole lot of time to work on it over the past week but I got a few things done. I was able to glue on the back straps: And cut in clean the side pieces: Now I just need need to secure the back buckle and cut the straps to length and place the rivets: Tonight I will be working on the front straps.
stuf123 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Ok, rivets in the belt are complete. As I get my sewing machine up and running, I started working on the back armor. But I have a question. I have seen some pictures that has one rivet to secure and one to put through the Tank Topper. Others it looks like the rivet though the Tank Topper is the only one. On the SC back, it only has a small bumb to attach the hump. To get the Tank Topper to have the rivet also secure the Back Hump, it has to be pushed way back: But most pictures show the Tank Topper like this: Any input you guys have would be great. Thanks all.
BikerScout007 Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I had the tank topper pushed all the way forward so I could do the one rivet through the plastic. A lot of people extend the back bump with a piece of ABS plastic to make it easier. Check Pandatrooper's build thread to see this. 1
EnigmaEngine Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 ABS plastic, piece of vinyl gutter, same thing. *cough* But you've got it spot on. Either you need to push the topper in close, or construct/use something to extend it out, usually L-shaped.
stuf123 Posted June 26, 2014 Author Posted June 26, 2014 Thanks for the tips. I decided to push the topper in close because I liked the look of it better. I have not put on the rank bars yet because I didn't know which ones to use in the SC pack. It came with two sets of bars. Anyone know which one is used on the back? I also did a little work on the bend of the belt to fit me a little better as well. 1
EnigmaEngine Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 As to the rank bars; whichever you prefer, I believe. Mine came with two options as well. Ended up using the six larger ones because I liked the look better.
jameserec Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 I looked at pandatroopers build and used the same rank stripes as he did. Also his transfer technique with the painters tape made it easy to line them up.
stuf123 Posted June 26, 2014 Author Posted June 26, 2014 Transfer technique worked great! Did a quick fitting on the full belt before I start cutting a sewing the straps. How does the lengths and positions look?
EnigmaEngine Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 A little hard to tell without the cummerbund. It looks close...maybe drop them just a little bit lower?
Griffin-X Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Nah...leave 'em there until you get suited up. Then...it'll be more clear. Also, rotate them a tad more outward.
stuf123 Posted June 26, 2014 Author Posted June 26, 2014 Thanks Enigma. I won't be doing any final lengths until my cummerbund arrives. I did find some time to start working on the helmet. I got the eyes cut out and a better dry-fit with super magnets.
stuf123 Posted June 28, 2014 Author Posted June 28, 2014 So I need a little input from anyone willing to jump in. I woke up this morning and looked at the mask and the cut I made...it felt "off". I followed the lines from SC exactly. So I did a little measuring and it looks like it is not symmetrical at all. This is the cut as it stands now: Just to show how off it is, here are mirrored versions of the left and right side: As you can see in the original, I drew in a few lines by eye in an attempt to make it look more even. I then took it into photoshop and did a little work to see what really needed to be fixed. Here is my suggested fix (red is what would be cut): And this is what it would look like with the lens in: Am I over-thinking this? Does this fix still keep it "on model"?
EnigmaEngine Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 In the end, it ought to look right to you. That said...the originals had plenty of defects and weren't really symmetrical. You'll probably be fine either way....it's just a choice between having it more movie-like or more pleasing to the eye.
01Hawk Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 I cut a bit more off the upper part of my SC .. Mine is def not symmetrical but I wanted the opening to be bigger.
jameserec Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 The red line looks good for cutting out. Possibly a little more than that on top.
stuf123 Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 Hello all, I finally found a few more free days to continue on my build. Boots are almost done, just need to add the holster! Thanks xpxrobbie! The suit is coming along. Thanks ucblack! Also found a few minutes to work on my son's 3D printed lightsaber. Still have a few more things to paint to finish it up. This week is all about getting this thing done. Wish me luck! 1
stuf123 Posted October 7, 2014 Author Posted October 7, 2014 Opened up the visor hole more based on some of the feedback I got. I am pretty happy with it.
stuf123 Posted October 8, 2014 Author Posted October 8, 2014 Did some dry-fitting on the chest pieces before I start cutting the straps. I think it might be riding a little high...but the spacing for the pouches seems right.
stuf123 Posted October 8, 2014 Author Posted October 8, 2014 My wife reminded me that I can't properly line things up unless I am wearing the flight suit. She was right of course. I take back what I said about the chest piece being to high. Seeing with the black it feels better. 1
