Tech'ing up!

Hey all!

So, has anyone considered adding extra tech to their uniforms? Helmets can have a bit of leftover space inside them, which can be perfect for adding in some extra gadgets, like a microphone so people can hear you better, at the very least.

I'm considering researching what it might take to install two small cameras in the side sponsons of the Scout helmet, and wire them up to little screens on either side of the inside of the helmet to help increase field of view. For those of you that have worn these helmets, does that seem like a feasible thing to do?

What other tech ideas do you guys have? What can we do to make this armor not just for show?

Myself personally I'll open be putting in a mic and maybe a red LED in the MC hollow snout for x-mas troops(havent decided yet if I'll actually do the LED) beyond that I am primarily a handler so maybe hookup so I can listen in on the radio chatter at big events. Also consider if you will have the trooper chatter going and where you want your speaker/s.

I'm installing an old computer fan I have leftover, rigged to a toggle switch and a 9v battery to keep me cool for those summer and spring troops. It has blue LEDs that might shine a bit through the visor to give the illusion that my helmet is powered, per EU knowledge of Imperial Troops helmets having HUDs and a microcomputer for mission sensitive data, cross-comms and etc for more effective squad functionality. I've also thought about putting a camel-bak hydration pack in the tank, and hiding the tube inside the armor and running it up my balaclava and into my helmet, but I'm not sure I'll get THAT hot.

Other than that, I haven't thought of adding any extra gadgets, particularly ones that would be seen. Granted, I'm also planning on trooping with the BF2 Sniper Rifle (E-11s or DC-15x depending on who you ask), so having a "HUD" illusion would go well with being a "Scout Sniper" and having the HUD sync with the scope reticle, rangefinder, etc for ease of work. But mostly, from experience trooping as Batman, I just don't want to die of heat stroke at a Con or something.

I do rock a microphone/amp so I don't have to yell through my helmet, and as for the "spoons" near the ears, I cut holes out and backed the black decals with screen-door mesh so my hearing isn't quite as impaired as it could be. Which, as Batman, I have no peripheral, nor can I hear a damn thing since the cowl is made of form-fitting vinyl. It doesn't breathe at all, and really makes me appreciate how easy the Scout is to wear in comparison. The Batsuit also makes me appreciate more simple things like being able to go to the bathroom whenever I want, bending over, walking in general.. you know. All the little things most of us take for granted.

Ooh, a camel pack in the backpack, that's a great idea! I know of some costumers that have much larger costumes and suits, and they use Nasa-style cooling systems to keep them cool during hot days. Being in Florida, I totally understand how heat can be a problem. I might try installing a fan too, that just sounds like a good idea! It seems like there's plenty of room in the chest, backpack, and various pouches to hold all sorts of gear, batteries, and whatnot, and with some clever connections, they wouldn't be too difficult to hook up and disconnect.

I would LOVE to figure out how to put a fan in my bucket the way Karl is. Being in the same Garrison, I may have to pick his brain on that. Didn't find I needed a mike, and Rain-X solved my lens fogging issue, but it did get quite warm over time. As long as I took breaks I was alright, but in hotter conditions it could be an issue.

I´ve got a SC bucket and got both a fan and a mic in it without problems, the Aker and mp3 is in one of my front pockets, in the other pocket I´ve got my trading cards.

I like the idea about the camel pack for long troops a lot, perhaps I should get that installed too ;)

Also like the idea about the LED light in the helmet :D I could hook it up with the fan.

Another super-simple thing I thought of to do would be to put a small speaker in one of the front pouches hooked up to an MP3 player to play the Imperial March when walking in the doors to a place :D

My helmet will have a wireless headset, paired with a receiver in the pouches, enabled by a push-to-talk cable running to my glove. The wireless receiver will be connected to my Aker amp, along with a tiny MP3 player looping the BSN 'chatter' file.

No fans for me. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the bucket! :D

I also do Batman, may or may not have mentioned that. Cowl is form-fitting vinyl, which doesn't breathe one single bit. I've actually passed out in the suit before, once in a spring/summer convention. It's pretty brutal, considering one convention around last Halloween, I drank 4 liters of water in the span of 4 1/2 hours and didn't pee. Hint number one that a heat stroke is imminent, or perhaps kidney stones. (I'd rather have a heat stroke. 'Stones ain't no fun 'less you got dilloted or morphine). Here in the Devil's Butthole (~ an hour from the coast in Alabama), I've had more than a couple of heat strokes and can't risk another. There's always a heat index of 110, and 3000% humidity. I put the fan in as a precautionary measure, since I know too well what the consequences will be. I know you were joking, and I'm not trying to be a "Debbie Downer," just dishing out my reasoning for installing a fan.

Also, that's a SWEET mic/amp set.

i have thought of putting a camelback on myself also but the camera and fan idea is a no go for me cuz it won't fit inside the SC helmet

I have an SC bucket, and I use ~60 or 80mm computer case fan. Hit up Newegg, make some measurements, and be VERY CAREFUL when you wire all of that up. Seriously, make sure your fan is low-amp draw, or else it'll make the 9V rupture (which means you'd require a 12v battery instead), but if you're 120mm or under, rule of thumb is that a 9v is fine. I could explain Wattage, Power, Amps, Volts, Ohms and power draw, but I'm not the best teacher. Because I work as a metrologist, (not a weatherman, I told my drill instructor I didn't want to be a weatherman), I tend to assume everyone knows what I'm talking about...since everyone I DO talk with that about DOES know what I'm saying.. Drives my wife nuts when I look at her like she's stupid when she gives me the puzzled look after I talk about Torque and Pressure transducers, and how 2000 lbsft isn't anything to f*%@ around with...
