This is my first attempt at making boots and I'm swinging for the fence here. Bought a pair of Payless Dexter work boots which looked the same as their other brand. I added the elastic laces since they are a flat lace and I though it wouldn't stand out as much when I go to cover them with vinyl.

How does it look? I still need to get some khaki spray paint to make them uniform and tighten the laces. Then I'll remove the water proof tag and begin covering.

Not bad. I'd have gone a little lower with the middle line on the back.

looks good. i am hating cutting out the upper slots

Thanks Mike, thanks Christian. I didn't realize the marks were so high when I started cutting. I just followed the contour of the boot. Too late now though I'll just have to remember that for future reference. The upper slots were real easy actually. I used a #4 flat blade, cut the outline and just "scooped" out the chunk of rubber.

Not bad bud, your going to have to paint the soles though as they are supposed to be a single colour. Also I wouldn't worry too much about the elastic, you wont see much of the lace once finished. With elastic you cant then pull them up tight, and they do stretch eventually so if it was me id stick the laces back in

I used BatNinja's boot tutorial as a guide, he says that a khaki paint will work to give it the right color. As far as the laces go, is it easy to tighten and loosen them when the calf piece is attached? My main concern was getting into and out of them.

I finally had some time this weekend to work on my build. I've got one boot stretched and glued. The other one is streched, but seems to be taking a little more work than the first one. Here are the pics so far.

Great work so far and hate to say this, but with that little amount of vinyl covering the toe your gonna have a job covering the gap between the leg part of the boot and the toe.

When I made mine I made sure the vinyl covering the toe was covering at least three lace holes and reached back to the heel of the sole. That way you'll get an overlap with the leg part and have a much easier time covering the seam with the dogbone.

I see what you mean. I cut the extra off tonight and realized that if I had laid it 90* from how it is stretching would have been easier. I might start over with it seeing the huge gap where the dog bone lays and with a few crinkles around the toe itself. Looking at it after reading your input made me go look at the tutorial and I noticed I was trying to make it stretch to the wrong part of the sole. Well, it should be easier the next time through.
